Has anyone heard any good or bad things about this card?

using a P4 1800 with 256 ram, seems ok, but problems with game slowdown and computer freeze on high graphic games.

Fan is working, spinning, maybe heat sink problems, temps, etc?

Any input?

I'm not surprised your getting slowdowns, the GF2 MX400 is very underpowered for most modern games. Also for smooth gameplay you really should have atleast 512mb system memory, some games are really jerky with only 256mb.

That card is indeed a bit outdated, so running any recent games could pose a problem. Which are the games you play that have slow downs? Upgrading to 512 ram could help quite a bit too, as nemesismk2 has stated, especially if you're running winxp.

Well, still running Win98, and the main game is Command and Conquere Red Alert 2. It has also happened on Roller Coaster Tycoon, and others.

Dont know when I will upgrade to xp, but really still like Win98, So I built 4 computers to replace my old P2's and used the 98 OS's instead of changing. I really seem to have problems with XP. I still operate and maintain an NT network at work, and like it alot. All 4 computers are networked at home as well.

Is it just me then about the use of XP?

Is 98 really outdated that I should really consider upgrading?

98 isn't that outdated, I still use it on one of my rigs and it's fine. My only problem with it is that it's not as stable as xp, other than that I can pretty much live with it. As for those slowdowns, your card, though dated, has enough power to run those. I used to play ra2 on a p4 1.8ghz, 512 ram, and a tnt2 and it ran fine.

I also run Win98SE on both my rigs and have no problems with it.
I really hate giving Microsoft $100-$200 every 2 years for a new operating system.
I would definatly upgrade your video card though. For $65 A Radeon 8500 or Geforce 3
will double your FPS on games and give you DX 8 features. The Geforce 2 400 is really
holding back your processer.

I use Win98SE for games and Win2000 for work -- 2000 is much more stable than 98SE, especially for software development with Visual Studio (C++/MFC). With 98SE one program crashing will often destablize the whole OS while with 2000 only that one app dies and the OS is fine.

Win2000 also is free of product activation fun so you can change parts as much as you want.

I'll probably switch to XP Pro though when I set up my next PC in another month or two.

Oh, and get that geforce 3 (around $50 in FS/FT forum), it will definitely help in any 3D game.

If you really want stability, use Windows 2000 professional. But make sure that your games can play on it. Usually the newer games can play just fine under Win2k. Much Much less buggy than XP and far less annoying. Also, you might want to know that Windows 98 can only utilize up to 128 MB of ram. Second edition I believe can utilize up to 192MB of ram. Keep in mind that it can "see" more memory than that, it just cant use it. So upgrading your memory using Windows 98 OS is kind of a waste of money after 192MB on 98SE.

???????:Q
Not true at all, As jcrocco says Win98SE can use 512mb without problems, My load times in Everquest were cut in half when I went from 256mb to 512mb.
