I'm stuck here I don't know which to choose these prices are in canadian the evga gtx 260 can be had for $240 + tax with a $20 rebate and the 1gig 4870 for $249 + tax bought from ncix I only gotta pay the GST.. which would be the better card is it worth upgrading from a 8800gt.

I play at 1680x1050 res no AA and this is mainly for crysis warhead its playing, it just not as well as I'd want with the very high quality DX9 settings is it worth it to buy now or should I just wait for a newer card to come out or more price cuts?

thanks for the help

those new vid cards coming out mid april is it going to be the same price as the 4870 right now, or are we lookin at $300+?

what kinda price cuts would we see on these cards now $20-$40 less?

Yeah, I'm stuck on this myself. Both card are $199 and less right now.

All prices from the egg.

EVGA 896-P3-1255-AR GeForce GTX 260 Core 216 896MB

$199, $179.99 after MIR.

XFX GX260NADFF GeForce GTX 260 Core 216 896MB
(comes with Free 4GB USB flash drive)

$198.99, $168.99 after MIR.

SAPPHIRE 100259-1GL Radeon HD 4870 1GB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI

$199

I was pretty much set on the 4870 until the prices on the 260 dropped today. Now I'm not so sure. The latest anandtech benchmarks show the 4870 beating the 260 core 216 in all 5 games here:

But I'd love to see something more recent. I literally can't decide.

I'd say the 4870 - you get a little more bang and memory for the buck.

However - the newegg deal is pretty sweet - free shipping + 4gb usb stick. The only drawback I see is the 896mb [let's say some game needs 1gb minimum down the road].

If the GTX 260 can be had for cheaper, get that.

Exactly. Whichever is cheaper because you can't really go wrong either way...although I do like that several nV partners have better warranties.

I would get a 4870 1 gig because that's what I have and it's the best you can buy. I would also recommend a GTX260 216 because that's what I want to replace my 8800GTS, and it is the best you can buy 😛

Seriously though, there have been a half dozen of these threads in the past month, search is your friend. Maybe this needs a sticky hehe.

'd save about $35 bucks if I went with the gtx 260..

my god damn head is spinning from readin through reviews they perform nearly identical would the 100 mb make ANY difference watsoever in performance later on, the DX 10.1 on the ati and this Nvidia physx does it matter?

thanks for all the info so far

Look at 1680 res.

The 4870 is faster than the GTX260 in general in most games, but slower at the one game you specified. You'll have to decide how much importance to put on that one game, if that's all you want this rig for than you can have better performance from the GTX260. I think the 4870 is the 'better' card for that res overall, so knowing you'll probably play more games in time I'd say the 4870 is better... but only you can answer that part. 🙂

lmao thx

As has already been said, the 4870 and 260 216 are pretty much neck and neck. I doubt very much that you'll buy one and end up strongly wishing you'd bought the other instead.

Get the 260 if that's the case.

XFX makes a 4870 1GB that has a lifetime warranty. $215 after rebate.

I didn't notice the price drops on the 260/216. $199 before rebate is damned sexy. EVGA for about $180 after rebate.

With performance and warranties being so close, I'm leaning toward the 260/216.

Edit - Sorry, I just remembered that you're in Canada. Sh*t those are expensive! $237 after rebate for the EVGA and $312 after rebate for the XFX. It's academic at that point.

I may as well pay the 35 and just get the 4870 if it's going to have physx anyway sometime has a bit more memory and the 10.1 dirextx even though that may be useless now may be good to have

PhysX? I thought that was an nVidia/SLI only deal.

ATI Features: 10.1, Xfire.

Nvidia Features: CUDA, SLI, PhysX.

They each have the same performance, although it may be slightly different from game to game.

Don't let the fanbois here say one "roxors" the other, they are foolish. Both these cards will play pretty much any game, with decent eye-candy, up to and including 1920x1200, and often even higher resolutions.

Whatever card is cheapest is the best.

It is so far. It actually works in Win7 if you have another nVidia card to use along side your ATI card (I got it working with my 4870 and a 8800GT..there'a a thread here on these forums on how to do it).

What about the memory difference? Sure - the nVidia [896mb] is cheaper than the 4870 [1gb] - but what about "future proof" for games that need 1gb to run in hi-res?

Some say so what - but I definitely can feel the pain of having the 320mb 8800gts when playing GTA IV...
