I don't want to read an article written by Charlie that claims to confirm an article written by Charlie. No, really.

It was confirmed by a site that wasn't Charlie, with details that show it is worse than Charlie said, you actually need to buy more lesser cards to qualify for 4xx cards.

If you don't want to read that Nvidia does these things, then you'll never believe that they can do anything wrong. Which is fine, but it's not true.

If AMD was doing the wrong thing then Charlie would write about that. He has in the past, and also about Intel, and any other tech company that does things wrong. With Nvidia though, there's more to write about and because they cut him off PR there's more he's allowed to write.

So, we have a slower card than the underwhelming GTX 470 and NV have the gall to sell it at the same price as a 5850? What crack is NV smoking?

"OMG IT WILL HAVE BETTER TESELLATION PERFORMANCE!" Yeah if better means 20 vs 10 fps it doesn't matter because both still sucks.

NVIDIA is now working on a lower-end addition to its GeForce GTX400 series, and according to our reliable sources, the card will be branded as GeForce GTX 460.

The third Fermi-based consumer-class model will employ the P1025 reference PCB design, and feature 1GB of GDDR5 memory as well as 256-bit of memory interface. We have no idea yet about the amount of stream processors or frequencies.
Noteworthily, there won’t be a standard design of GeForce GTX460 – instead, the AICs have their own design rights. If things go well enough, the GeForce GTX 460 will make its debut on June 1st, with a similar price to Radeon HD 5850.

Nvidia's planned GTS 450 is rumoured to feature 192 shaders, while the GTX 470 has 448, so the new card should fit somewhere in between, which leaves a lot of room for speculation. We can only guesstimate that it will end up around 400 mark. (416, 384, take your pick. sub.ed.)

Nvidia will let partners mess around with the design, s a lot of non-reference cards can be expected.

I hope fuad is wrong on this one. If the gts450 is only 192 shaders that will be pretty disappointing, considering that the original gtx260 had 192 shaders. My guess is that the gf104 is a max 256 shader part (half of gf100).

My guess with the gtx460 is that it'll be either 352 or 384 shaders. Performance wise it probably needs to be 384 and it'll probably need a core/shader clock above 650mhz, 1300mhz to compete adequately with the hd5850.

Yea, I get the impression from that article that Nvidia feels the GTX470 is a solid notch above the 5850. I think the rest of us tink they are on pretty equal footing, with each having a few advantages over the other. Nvidia is delusional if they feel the GTX470 > 5850 and think they need a lower speced part to compete with the 5850.
