Geforce Go 8800 - Extinct

They said back in March this baby was due out May-Mid-Summer.

Now we're almost in October and not a word let alone speculation.

Can anyone shed some insight?

Was the 8800 Mobile scrapped?

I doubt it's been completely scrapped, but you do raise a good point: it's nowhere to be found. I can't even find a 8500/8600 mobile part. They must be waiting for a shrink to 65nm or something.

The 8700M is a decent part, but doesn't offer much over its the 7950 GTX Go.

My current notebook is itchy to be replaced, and while CPU technology has progress enough to justify it, graphics technology has lagged. My current notebook has a 7800GTX Go, obviously spending the 3k on a notebook with an ultra fast Core 2 and a 7950 wouldn't be worth the cost.

Yeah, in most cases the 8700M is SLOWER than the 7950GTX, and probably your 7800GTX as well. Notebooks have been hurting for a decent DX10 gaming setup, but things aren't even that decent on the desktop side.

Notebook needs a 96 or 128-stream 8-series card with at least a 256-bit memory interface and exceptional memory. Anything less will just be pathetic (like the 8400/8700).

Rumors are that the Dell XPS 1730 will be out on the 21st and should have the m8800 as an option, if not it will definitely have 8700m GT SLI.

I'll keep an eye on it, but I'm not in much of a hurry.

My notebook's PM 2.13Ghz Dothan and 7800GTX Go will be fine for a while longer. I'm looking at Nov-Dec 08 for my next replacement notebook. I think I've actually kept this one the longest of the 4 notebooks I've owned in the last 5 years.

I would imagine the power and heat envelope on a mobile 8800 would be very unappealing.

DTR notebook users don't particularly care, plus they could always die shrink it. NV uses TSMC, do they not? TSMC does have 65nm processing running, and they aren't far off from having 55nm working.

yeah you're right...havent even seen a mobile 8800 yet. maybe they are working on the next gen mobile parts or possibly even die shrinks to current mobile gpus?

I would imagine that would cause the delay we are seeing.

When i say unappealing i really mean "unlikely to function properly" i was a bit light on the situation.

Thats also like saying wheres our mobile QX6850s.

You cant cool these monsters in a laptop.
