lol.. i suppose we will know for sure when it acutally ships, however there is only one thing you can be sure of: there will be cards out that run it much better than anything currenlty available when HL2 actually does ship.

I would agree with this 100%. I was tired of people telling me to "increase AGP voltage, run at 4X AGP, turn off fast writes, use older software version" and so forth. It was like I had to cripple the card just to get it to run properly. I also got tired of the driver problems with all my games. I'll gladly give up a few percent points in speed for this tradeoff. I'm SURE HL2 will run fine with the 5900.

The jump was MORE than worth it. Not only do I not have a problem with my drivers for EVERY FREAKING GAME (I am sick of having to have 5 driver revisions for my ATI cards just because every time they get one game working, another stops), my multi monitor support is 100x better. Horizontal span is amazing and with my Geforce FX, I don't have to freaking have a monitor on every time I want to enable TV out support. It just treats the TV like a monitor and starts showing a picture. Add that to the 100 other things that seem to work out a whole lot better and I am happy to say I am a complete NVIDIA convert.
The funny thing is that when I had an ATI card, I defended it vehemently and no one could sway me away from it. Now, I am glad my roommate took the time to convince me to make the jump because now I don't have anymore ATI bs to deal with.

Seriously. And c'mon! Even when I bought the original radeon and thought I was so cool not to have a geforce 2, I had serious problems with my VIA motherboard that were never resolved. I mean, its one thing to talk about how the cards aren't fully DX9 compatible, etc, etc, but at least my 5900 hasnt had a SINGLE PROBLEM! That is WAY more than I can ever say for ANY ATI card I have ever had.

Are we talking about the deal or are we talking about our brand loyalty?

I have a 9800Pro and a FX5900 in my two systems. I haven't had a single problem with drivers, hardware or othewise with either card.

ATI may have lacked driver support years ago, but now they are a solid as NVidia.

Any problems between a video card and a motherboard with a VIA chipset was probably the fault of VIA. There early stuff was horribly incompatible.

Seriously though. For the price, a 5900 non-ultra with 2.2ns memory (stock clocked at 850, but easily oc to 950) is a very good card that will play all current games at very playable levels. Compare this to a 9600xt or a 5700 ultra at the same price, and you will be more than happy with the performance. A retail box 9800pro is still $40+more.

Performance is better with the 9800pro, but not noticible in most situations, especially if you take advantage of the headroom for overclocking the FX5900.

I would be leary of GameVE though.

No, ATI has not even come close to solving the driver problems! Thats a myth the ATI fanboys are pushing and as far as compatibility problems it runs deaper than Via chipsets. I have a AMD 761 chipset on one motherboard and had nothing but problems with one ATI card. Don't even try telling me I didn't remove the old Nvidia drivers because I had a clean install. If you have an ATI card and have no problems then I'm happy for you but please read the forums to see how many people are having big problems. Going back on topic, The BFG 5900 card is still available at FRY's for $199.99 and when I bought my last one a week or two ago it came with Call of Duty.

the XTs from nvidia do not necessaily suck, they memory is rated a little slower but it runs tighter to compensate. at stock speeds, the performance is very similar to the regular 5900

No this is not true for all nvidia cards. For the 5900, xt=se=pretty damn good. For some such as the 5600 xt though, yes xt=sucky.

Same card. The chipset seems to be 5900XT....but several venders (EVGA for one) is selling this card/chipset under the 5900SE title.
