Oh and is it just me or does NVIDIA's little DX8 vs DX9 plant demo actually show that the former is better? The latter looks more cartoonish.

I was about to say the same thing....

As well, how is the core made? I know ATi have gone for a flip-chip package, like with modern processors, but are nVidia going this route as well, or using the traditional methods for GPU's? If they did go flip chip, would it be any better (for cooling especially in its case)?

I belive nVidia is using FCBGA as well.

I'm not sure why people are getting hung up on the cooling. I agree that if the card needs to block 2 PCI slots to work... we'll that's dumb. I doubt the actual cards will require this type of cooling and CM's will use whatever cooling they think will sell. Just like they do now.

As far as using all PCI slots, doesn't the 1st PCI slot share IRQ with AGP and the second share IRQ with RAID? I know WinXP and ACPI handle IRQ's a bit differently now but I've never ever used PCI 1 or 2 in any PC i've built.

Rand - what on earth are you using 5 PCI slots for... NIC, Sound, 2nd Video, Modem, ?

AGP- Graphics
PCI 1- Graphics
PCI 2- NIC
PCI 3- USB 2.0 add-on card
PCI 4- Sound
PCI 5- SCSI card

I wish I had a sixth PCI card so I could add on an IDE controller card.
Actually for that matter, a 7th PCI slow would be nice so I could add another NIC instead of using the crappy onboard NIC to connect to my network. My current PCI NIC is for the cable modem.

This reminds me.... I reaaaally need to update my system rig on AT.

It would have been nice if the card wouldn't take up a pci slot, but I'll get over it if it really delivers. That said, I would be able to afford one for many many months, so it doesn't matter much.

The performance looks promising, but not because of those benchmarks released by NVIDIA. The sheer clockspeed of the core is going to make it a really fast card. However, I will wait until I see it in action before reserving one (In my dreams).

Am I the only one who likes the cooling of the FX? Maybe I'm just weird, but I don't ever use the closest PCI slot to the AGP slot anyway. I would rather it goto something like removing the video card's heat from the air before it gets into the case. Of course, if I was using more than 2 PCI slots it might be a concern...

besides you know that thing has to cost a good deal more than your advrage cooler, even at wholesale.

i'm sure it's possible to take the cooling system of of it.. and replace it with a water block

Looks very impressive, but I am going to reserve my judgement until real reviews hit the net. Until then, Ill snuggle up to my Radeon 9700 Pro.

<Elcs patiently waits for the Kyro III>

and waits.....

and waits...........

I hope its good. Nvidia need a good slapping and I havent had any experience with ATI.

Delta Chrome 0wnz j00! Seriously though, we gamers have already been dissapointed by Parhelia, Xabre and Wildcat. While it would be keen if STM or VIA/S3 Graphics came out with some truly competitive products at least in the mid-range, I am not going to get excited over something before it's available and proven worthy. That goes for NVIDIA too.

Mainstream cooling really is getting quite redicualus and this shows it! Jet loud fans on CPU's to keep em cool monstorous fan/heatsink on graphic cards to cool em too, why don't these damn companies work on making their chips produce less heat instead of just putting more and more cooling on?

nVidia REALLY need to do what ATi have done with the R300 - simple and normal cooling

- in fact all the Radeon's has had normal cooling while the GeForce's have been getting crazier each time

I'm DEFINITELY going with ATi if nVidia can't wipe this off their feet.

(And I Have never owned an ATi card before - all 3Dfx and nVidia - but this will be the turning point - ATi are just sensible)

What? You mean an AGP card takes up an AGP slot? DOWN WITH NVIDIA!

The Ultra version will have the irregular cooling. The non-Ultra will have normal cooling.

I agree 150%!!! At least ATi can keep up and are able to use standard cooling...ever since nVIDIA aquired 3dfx technologies, they seem to be taking on 3dfx's ideas to make irregular and over-sized cards...(Ti4600 and now the GeForceFX cooling) If you're going to own a FX card, might as well get the best, since you're already dishing out a few hundred bucks. :disgust:

I hafta agree with 007 about the cooling issue. If ATI can do it on a .15 process, then nvidia should be able to do it on .13 (im not sure if those are the correct sizes, corect me if im wrong.) Besides, how much better is the geforce FX anyway? It supports more advanced shaders, which wont be needed for another year or two when dx9 games come out. On top of that, the geforceFX uses ddrII to compete with the r9700, but it cant even provide the same raw bandwidth as the r9700. I also point out that neither DDRII nor the .13 process that ndivida plans to use are currently available technologies. So really, the GeforceFX seems only slightly better than the 9700, but its not even availalbe because the technology isnt even available.

sigh, if the geforcefx rox0r5, and it is available at a competitive price, i will gladly eat my words. But right now, i remain unimpressed.

Peace
Butch

It's been mentioned many times but is still relevant - are they ever going to revise the AGP spec to allow the components (or at least the core) to sit on the other side of the PCB? The chip can have a larger cooler then, and not obsucre any expansion slots.
