Looking at the ATI and NVIDIA images side by side, the first thing you notice is that the images are far from identical. First, we focus our attention towards the light fixtures on the porch. In the Radeon 9500 image, there is a bloom of light around each bulb. Moving over to the NVIDIA screenshots, we find the light is essentially a yellow trapezoid with no lighting effects whatsoever. In similar fashion, we see a lack of lighting effects on and around the main character on the NVIDIA cards. Specifically looking at the light on the device on his back, you see that the green LCD screen is a flat color on the GeForce FX cards though it gives off a haze as you would expect when visualized on the Radeon 9500 Pro. Likewise, the characters head seems to also be flat on the NVIDIA cards. When looking at the ATI image, his head seems rounded and the whole scene comes as being much more realistic. Now compare the shadows behind the lattice and the ability to look through it on the ATI card. Lastly look at the dead guy on the patio. The ATI card shows the model to be laying "under" the cast shadow as one might think, while the NVIDIA card seems to spotlight the model while leaving the shadow underneath.
Overall, we were surprised to see that the NVIDIA cards were experiencing such trouble with this game's lighting effects considering that it is a popular Xbox title ( running on NVIDIA hardware ). In situations like this it is hard to say who is "wrong" and who is "right" as we actually need the gamedev to make the call. I think we can all agree that in this specific example, there is no doubt that the ATI card is delivering a better quality of image than the GeForceFX. At this time, NVIDIA engineers are looking in on this matter.

The 5900 looks pretty impressive. It's a nice comeback by nVidia. The super high quality numbers are fantastic! But with all of the hype over the 5900 don't forget though what ATI has done for the industry over the last 2 years. It was ATI that single handedly kept nVidia from becoming a monopoly. Matrox couldn't do it. Sis couldn't do it. No one else could do it. I've got a ton of respect for ATI after battling back from the Rage Fury days when they were badmouthed and just downright uncompetitive. I've always tried to support the underdog just like I support AMD. Anyway, this competition among nVidia and ATI is very healthy and leaves us with some kicka$$ video cards. As long as the price is right I wouldn't have a qualm about buying either of these brands. $500 is a little rediculous for any video card, but $200-$300 seems pretty reasonable.
