Hello ya'llz,

I'm new here, I've heard you guys are rather reliable when it comes to information and reccomendation, and since I'm defragging my HD ATM, I'm going to make this short, sweet, and to the point:

I'm thinking about getting a GeForce FX 6600GT. At the moment, I have a GeForce FX 5700 128MB... Is this wise, or is there something better within the same price range, perhaps even something by ATi?

What I'm planning on:

Any help appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I think it will be a great improvement. The geForce FX series (5xxx) were known to be poor performers, so you should see a big improvement. Also, you will be able to use the DX9.0 code paths in current games.

The only ATI card in that price range is the 9800Pro, which is much worse than the 6600gt.

Also, the card you linked on newegg is an XFX. While a pretty well-known company, I have heard lots of bad things about quality and customer service. Maybe you should get the eVGA (also on newegg). It will actually be a little cheaper (only $4 shipping) as well as be by a better company.

I was about to throw up a rebuttal to your post Sr but you're right..the 6600gt spanks the 9800 pro except in older games where they're pretty well matched up. For the money you definately cannot go wrong with the 6600gt.

Hmm, so according to some benchmarks I've just read/seen, the 6600GT blows the 5900XT and 9800Pro out of the water, both of which I hear are very good cards.

Now a guy just told me I might as well shell out the additional hundred for a 6800GT. Would that be worth it? My reasoning is that it will

A. Last longer (In terms of 'useful life')

and

B. Offer, most importantly, better performance.

Thanks, yet again.

P.S.: Overall, what manufacturer would you people reccomend?

manufacturer for the 6600gt or the 6800gt? I have a BFG 6800nu that has been rock solid minus not being able to overclock with the last shader enabled. If you have the extra money I would go for the 6800gt. It will last you quite a while to come and pretty much is the best deal overall for the money. But if money is tight go with the 6600gt.

First of all, the 6800gt is almost twice the price of a 6600gt. It is a better performer, but whether it is worth the $200 is up to you. If you don't mind playing at lower resolutions on some games (Doom3, HL2, etc.), a 6600gt would probably serve you fine. Also, If you buy a $200 card now, then a $200 in the next generation (or two), you will have a better performer at the end for the same price.

Edit: There are uite a few good brands for the 6600gts. Leadtek, eVGA, and MSI are all good choices. I just bought the eVGA myself off newegg for $217 (after shipping).

First of all, you want to pick based on reliability and quality of cusomer support. You don't want your card to selfdestrct, but if it does, you want to be able to get a new one/refund if it does.

Nect, you want to pick based on other physical qualities: OCing potential, heat output, etc.

finally, you want to pick based on the vaious extras yo get with it. If there is a game you rellly want including, might as well get it. If it comes with three games you already have, try another. Also, if it has 2 DVI ports and you have a VGA monitor (most CRTs), make sur it comes with an adapter, or just buy ne seperate.

if you have the money by all means go for the 6800gt, with my pc, i know that i would. HOWEVER, there is no point pairing up a 6800gt with a amd 2000+, or a 2ghz p4 for example, ie.. what are the rest of ur comp specs?

This one is a better manufacturer, it's not in stock now, but it will be in a few days and I would rather get this one.

BTW, it will be a great improvement, more than twice the performance.

The 6800GT will probably last you twice as long and maybe more. I will give you killer performance in games right now letting go into higher resolutions with extra eye candy on. It is twice as powerful as the 6600GT.

Good brands are eVGA, Leadtek, BFG. Only ones I trust.

Also, If you buy a $200 card now, then a $200 in the next generation (or two), you will have a better performer at the end for the same price.
Yeah, I agree with 200 dollars every year. Your card might not ever be top of the line, but it will still be powerful playing at lower resolutions such as 1024x768 as I have to do in doom3 with the 6600GT. I have another eVGA, but if you plan on Overclocking, Leadtek is better.

I have the exact linked card, and i couldnt be happier.

Fast, cool, reliable, quiet.

I have the XFX GeForce 6600GT and can not be happier with it. Scored a 3200 with 3dMark05. I play both HL2 and Doom3 at 1280x1024@72Hz with no problems. Was a definite upgrade from my 9800pro.

Instead of getting a 6600GT or shelling out an additional $200 for a 6800GT, why not got to Outpost.com and get the BFG 6800OC for $250... it's probably the best bang-for-buck deal on the planet right now... wish I would've known about it before I paid the same price at another place for a BFG 6600GT.

I upgraded from a BFG GeForce 5900 (vanilla)... as mentioned, the 6600GT blows the 5900 out of the water on DX9 titles and is roughly the same in older DX7 and DX8 games (certainly no worse).

Aight, here's the two I'm looking at now:

6600GT -- http://www.newegg.com/app/View...tion=14-122-206&depa=0

6800GT -- http://www.newegg.com/app/View...tion=14-130-208&depa=0

These are going to be the only things on my BDay list... And seeing the price of the 6800... I'm pretty sure I'll be getting a 6600 if any :D

Edit: Oh yeah, you wanted the specs for the rest of my system...

Pentium 4 2.66 GHz
512 MB DDR Ram
80 Gig Harddrive (Probably gonna get a 120 Gig slave for this sometime)
Is there a way to find out my power supply wattage and stuff without popping the case? (I Can't get it open)
Windows XP Home Edition + SP2 (Don't ask me how I got SP2... Didn't want it :\)

Those are the vitals... if you need anything else, ask meh.

You can't play D3 in a higher res, Vian?
I'd think with that card you could, unless something else is holding you back.
