Geforce 8800GTX 768MB -- What CPU would be ideal to max it out?

Sup folks, I'm buying a Dell system with 2GB of RAM. I already have my video card (Geforce 8800GTX 768MB) so the only question is the processor.

I'm considering the Core 2 Duo E6600 or E6700.

Can the E6600 handle that card maxed out with no bottlenecking? If so, I have no need to spend the extra $250 $$ on the e6700.

Had bad bottlenecking problems with my current Pentium D and this card...virtually no performance gain over a 7900GT.

WIll the e6600 max out this card, or is the extra .266 ghz on the e6700 worth it?

Any opinions on which C2D I really need would be GREATLY appreciated!!

Thanks for the reply...Well I'm probably going to end up with the e6600 and will sell the card.

I need something that will match the e6600.

Possibly an 8800GS?

An 8800GTS would be a closer match for an E6600, although it would likely take an E6700 to max out the GTS. They're extremely fast cards.

You're playing either dated games or at low resolutions. Of course any C2D is going to wipe the floor with a Pentium D. 😛

If you have Vista try the new NV DX10 demo with the floating world. At higher than default resolution it will bring the 8800GTX to its knees.

You'll be fine with an E6600 and an 8800GTX. The E6600, even at stock, is a very powerful processor and the extra 11% of clockspeed that the E6700 has isn't going to make a difference in any game that is GPU-limited. If you're gaming @ 1920x1200 4x/16x (which you should be with that setup) then the difference between the two CPU's probably won't be 1 FPS.

Your best choice really is not to get a Dell at all, and build your own. A system with an E6400 and a 8800GTX would cost far less and the E6400 could be overclocked to perform way better than that stock E6600.

The X6800 is a waste of money when you can get an E6600 up to X6800 speeds and higher with very little effort...

I can read too, I didn't say "OP should buy an E6600 and overclock it", I was making a point in the vain hope that he would possibly be surprised and intrigued by this and reconsider.

The E6600 will easily handle an 8800GTX, possibly even the E6400. I'm hoping that my 2.6GHZ X2 will be able to handle being paired up with an 8800GTX soon.
