Geforce 8 series

Well, I'm hyped about the Geforce 8 series. When is it going to come out, architecture, price, sli. anything

It will be out on Sept 23rd, it will have 33 pipes and 69 pixel shading processor cores for 50 bucks and will require at least two monitors becuase its so powerful it will blow up just one if thats all its plugged in to

No really, according to the latest from AT, it will be out towards end 2006/early 2007, and ought to be fast given that it could require up to 300w

My opinion is no one knows squat about it except it'll be DX10 and eat power like a mother bitch.

Yeah, based on that, I'm thinking I give my 7800 gtx to my son and get a 1900xt for a while. Maybe get a 7950x2 pending more indo on the heat/noise/power consumption.

The power requirement for G80 and r600 appear to be kind of a joke (if true) and they say the following gen will be back to lower power. So they expect people to put a 300w space heater in one of their 5-1/4" bays to cook their burners for a year and then toss it? 😕

Plus, afaik, if I'm not jumping on the vista bandwagon right away, dx10 won't do me any good anyway.

i am kinda disappointed because i wanted unified shaders for general computational purposes, and i am a linux fan so ATI isn't really an option.

You can do general computation on current hardware also, using the pixel shaders and floating point textures. I'm not sure how much better suited unified shaders would be for that purpose.

Yeah I'm buying an XTX and selling my BFG GTX too. I'm borrowing an XTX now and it is freaking incredible, you will literally see around an 80-110+% increase in FPS. If you game at 19xx rez, about a double...

I dont think the X1900XTX series necessarily gets enough credit for its speed along with what is a sharper picture and better ocing options

Probably is refering to the voltage options... or maybe ATI Tool, I really like that program.

maybe you should give up your skooma habit and spend more time with your son

Hmm...12 months for a new generation is the norm. That means NV should have had Geforce 8 by now.

May/June 2005: 7800GTX (NV wins)
October/November 2005: X1800XT (ATi wins)
November 2005: 7800GTX 512 (NV wins)
January 2006: X1900XTX (ATi wins)
March 2006: 7900GTX (Crown Disputed)
June 2006: 7950GX2 (NV Wins)
??? 2006: R580+ (Probably close match - will go neck-and-neck for the rest of the year...or maybe not)

Neither company really needs to launch a card before Christmas 2006. NV's already left the 12-months-to-new-gen race...ATi has 4 months left. They will probably both wait for Xmas. By then, there will probably be new games that would benefit from brand-new tech. (UT2007,ET:QW, Crysis,BF2142) And of course, Vista (read DX10) will make more sense to annouce a new generation of DX10 GPUs.

Yup, voltage options... of course comparing it to 7900GT is a bit different but generally the voltage access and the rest is greatly appreciated

I entered the thread with some hopes. Now I walk away 🙂

(and it will probably be released sometime when DX10 is availible/starts to become availible/never 😛)

You can bet every effort will be made to release g80/r600 before Xmas to take advantage of the shopping frenzy.
