GeForce 6800GT PCI-E vs. GeForce 6800Ultra PCI-E

I'm just wondering, is the performance difference between these that big to warrant such a price difference? I'm considering getting the XFX GeForce 6800GT PCI-E from Monarch for $368, but the BFG GeForce 6800Ultra OC PCI-E for $540 looks so tempting. What do you guys think? Is it worth it or is the XFX 6800GT a good choice? Keep in mind that I'm planning on only using one card for now; I was thinking of buying the second to run in SLI in about a year when prices drop and such. Please give me some advice--I need it badly.

No, the performance difference between the two is far from huge.
The great price difference is due to two primary reasons:
1. The difference between top-of-the-line component and second best component is always big in the computer hardware world. (e.g. A64 4000+ cost twice as much as A64 3800+)
2. Supply and Demand: The supply of PCI-E 6800Ultra is still very limited

Yeah, that's what I thought. I'm probably going to go with the XFX 6800GT like I planned originally. By the way, would you happen to know what kind of warranty XFX supplies for this card? I checked the site but none was listed.

Exactly.

Do yourself a favor and search for all the posts on XFX and I doubt you'll buy one. Vote for BFG here. Lifetime warranty is hard to argue with.

ao I haven't used XFX but their reputation here seems to be terrible. Yes the 6800 GT is a much better choice unless you've got boatloads of extra cash. For the extra $200 or 45% more you'll only get 10% faster performance in games - not worth it.

As for the choice of brand evga, leadtek, and bfg all have good reputations, though the leadtek and bfg PCIe 6800 GTs are above $400 at the moment. I myself just ordered an evga 6800 GT from newegg for $370.

Man, just when I thought I finally had my mind set on the card, you guys change my mind--you're all killing me 😛. Hehe, thanks for the heads up though. I might just go with the BFB GeForce 6800GT OC PCI-E for $425. That's not terribly more than the XFX card, and I get a lifetime warranty and an extra 20mhz on the core. Pretty good deal right?

As crappy as XFX is, I'd rather save $55 and buy it instead of the BFG. 99% of the cards that XFX makes are fine.

That is one VERY OPTIMISTIC 99%

I don't think your odds are anywhere near that good.

(but then I don't think much more of BFG. Consider it.... Best BuY chose Visiontek because they could source them at low cost (ie: they were VERY CHEAP). When Visiontek showed it's true colors, rolled over and died because of their terribly inferior product... who did Best Buy choose next??? There is some truth to the notion you will get what you pay for. If price is your only benchmark of concern.... well get the phone ready for that RMA call.)

BFG hands down.

To put it in perspective, I wont buy any other brand of Nvidia based cards.
They are based in America, and have the best warranty and best cards IMO.

That means not only are you helping American jobs, but you are getting the best card in return. With tech support that when you call you get Joe Sixpack.. not Ying Modung or some indian named "Jackie" for your added confidence that the person can actually help you with your problem (which never happens).
