i know this topic now moved on to something else, i cant seem to find a fix for the freezing and stuttering im having!, it only happens in one game, and that game is command and conquer generals, and zero hour.

ive just turned DEP off, and it seems turning fast writes off in the bios does nothing...also it seems that even though i turn fast writes off in the bios, when i get in to windows and check to see if its turned off in the drivers....theres still a tick in the box for fast writes, so i have no idea if its turned off or not. initially i thought as generals has 3d part, and a 2d part (the command bar thingy) running my card at 400/1100 in 3d mode but leaving it on 350/1000 for 2d mode was screwing it up, but at equal clocks the problems persists

st1x, thanks for reading the forum first. My Asus A8V was the same way, I oculd only get up to a 256 apeture, my MSI K8N Neo 2 Plat is up to 512 (max)

mmmm, lets see, did you flash the videocard's bios, or did you use softmods?

fastwrites shouldn't cause a prob, and they are prob turned to auto if they are supported (even if you cannot see it....oddly enough)

Try the y-splitter, it won't decrease performance, also, how beefy is your PSU....I know as soon as I replaced mine, I stopped getting shader issues. I still got lock ups, which I resolved with theoverclocking fix. Works fine now.

Get back to me, this one seems odd....

otispunkmeyer, I'd sat, if you don't get it in any other games (what ther games do you play?) that either your installation is corrupt, or incompatible, or something along those lines, not your videocard?

Wel the method I used to flash the mobo bios was writing the p4p800.rom to a cd rom and hitting alt + f2 at startup...

My psu is this one : http://www.silentpcreview.com/article153-page1.html

I never flashed my videocard bios because my frequency's were fine to start with...

I'll try putting in the y-splitter to see if it's more stable...

I read somewhere that the onboard ethernet adapter could cause some problems with the video, don't know exactly how this is possible and whether it's for agp or pci...

anyhow i disabled my network adaptor

I have the bfg 6800 ultra oc. I did clean new install of windows and installed battlefield veitnam (which I play the most). I do not last more than 20 seconds in any map before I completely freeze and get pixalation.

For the hell of it, I installed doom 3 and the game ran perfectly. I tried various drivers and flashed my bios to newest version but none of that worked. I already rma'd it before finding this thread and will have new card today.

If it doesn't work, I am going to try some of the ideas expressed here.

Is there anyone here running a similar system that runs battlefield vietnam fine?

My system specs are

Gigabyte k8npro
amd 3400 64
2 512 ddr400 3200
bfg 6800 ultra oc
Fortran (starts with a "F" but maybe Fortec?) 530W

Yea argoldst, our systems are very similar. I just switched from the AMD 3200+ to the 3700+ last week. BFV runs fine for me right now. As does everything else, although I was in the pain pond when I discovered this thread. Looks like I have fixed my problem since, scroll back to my earlier posts and maybe it'll help you too.

st1x, the 12V rail is only rated 18 A, this is pretty weak, since even the cheapy PSU that came with my AMD athlon 1.0 GHz ran a 16A 12 V rail. My X-Connect's 12V is rated a hefty 30A, enough to handle a 6800.....let alone an 6800 Ultra.

Try metering your 12V rail to see if it goes below 12V? If it does, you are drawing too much from it, and it cannot handle it.....and that means time to buy a new PSU...or get a diff videocard

Yeah that may have been my problem. I am running dual channel now with 2.5-3-10-3 1T and just played HL2 for about 2 hrs without any problems, not even a stutter. Used to be about 20 mins max and then crash. Do you think my RAM just isn't operating as well as it should or is there really some deal with the vid card here?

I don't know. They would both pass the boot up mem test at 2-2-5-2 1T just fine and it would run without exception until I started playing HL2. I'll probably try tweaking the timing more and see how close I can get to 2-2-5-2 1T. Are there any rules of correlation between the different timing parameters or are they pretty independent?

It's interesting that I would get the nv4_disp.dll crap because of this though.

Well, I RMA'd my old ultra oc and got the new one in. It is working great now.

So in my case, it turned out I had a bad vid card.

I have the same problem, i have a xfx 6800, p4 2.8 with 1g ram. I 've tried almost all the solutions and noticed some improvements but the freezes still happen... and yes only in direct 3d games that's why i really think it's a drivers problem. I guy told-me that all drivers after version 5xx.xx froze regularly, so he rolled back to those drivers and is freezing problems dissapeared, it must be definitly a driver problem. It happens to me like 1 freeze per hour ratio so it's not very annoying, i am waiting for a fix in drivers and i´ve quit messing with my settings... by the way i also noticed that dropping the ansiotropy from 16 to 8 improved stability a lot, before doing this i had like 6 freezes per hour, so it's definitly drivers.

Pedrov....wait a sec, aniso at 16? I don't doubt you are having lockups....even 6800Us cant do aniso at 16....maybe SLI can, but not a plain 6800. Secondly, if it is a driver issue, then I cannot say I have the same issues....that is a system incompatability. I doubt this is the case...you prob need to check out Bios and such.....

dunno what u r talking about, 16x aniso is fine on most examples of 6800's ive seen, maybe combined with some highly complex graphics it aint so good, but 16 is fine in so many games for me, get smooth fps no worries mate

on a different note, does anyone know any good nv bios hacking utils, i didnt have any luck with omniextreme, it didnt seem to change any values on my vid card....... **edit** yeah it did in the end 😀.

ok, when he says about aniso 16 and more stability, I am assuming D3 and HL2 like games, at which point aniso 16x is, well, not a good idea....

hehe, fair nuff

when i use powerstrip to look at my clocks, it tells me that my 3d(performance) clock is @ 425 while my 2d(standard) clock is @ 400. When i use omniextreme to look at my bios, it tells me my 2d clock is @ 425 while my 3d is @ 400. Even if I change them both to 425, I still get crashes, and powerstrip still tells me that my 2d clock is @ 400. anyone else have this issue?

Are you sure you're reflashing your video card BIOS after making the change?
Here's my little guide for how to backup, HACK, and reflash your NVIDIA 6800 video card BIOS.

First thing you need is a floppy bootdisk.
Download the driver-free one from bootdisk.com
http://download.sudhian.com/fa...oads/Misc/drdflash.exe
Run the program and follow the directions.

Download NVFlash 5.08
http://www.mvktech.net/index.p...einfo&filecatid=53
Extract the files to your new boot floppy.

Download OmniExtremeEdit FX v1.5
http://www.mvktech.net/index.p...info&filecatid=127
Extract these files to your desktop (or some folder you'd like to use).

Reboot your computer from the new boot floppy.
At the A: prompt:
nvflash -b backup.rom
[this backs up the video card's BIOS to backup.rom on the floppy]

When this finishes...Remove the floppy and reboot back into Windows.

Run the OmniExtremeEditFX program
(Put the floppy back into the drive)
Click File...Open BIOS
Open backup.rom from the A drive
In the 2D Core box change it to match whatever is in the 3D Core box.(usually 400 or 425)
Click File...Save BIOS
=============================
Save the file as newbios.rom
=============================
DO NOT USE BACKUP.ROM AS THE FILENAME
You need backup.rom should the reflash fail!

Reboot your system using the floppy.
At the A: prompt:
nvflash -5 -6 newbios.rom

You are done!
Remove the floppy and reboot into Windows.

I'll say it again....avoid drdflash...it seems picky about diskettes. Instead, go into my computer --> then insert the floppy, right click on A:\ --> click "format" on the drop down menu --> in the format dialog, select "boot disk" and click start, thus skipping the drdflash step....

I have the following hardware:

P4p800-e deluxe
p4 prescott 3ghz
asus 6800gt

and I have the same freeze problem.

For now, I've found that if I deactive the Hyperthreading, the freeze disapear with it.

Dont know why but I suggest you to try it, even if its not a solution regarding the loss of performances it can allow you to play, waiting for a fix.

Lot of person have the same kind of probleme with the 6800 series.

Thats fun to see how motherboard asustek+graphic card asus are not working perfectly.

Please let me know if the hyperthreading stuff work for you, this can show me that I have not a hardware problem and let me buy a ATI graphic card.

Sorry for my english, I am french 🙂

hey guyz, sorry to bring this dreadfull thread back to life. But i have the same problem with a buddys card. Hey did frankfan, end up finding a solution to his freeze up problem, its the exact time my friends is freezing up. I stoped reading after page 8, to much...lol...if you could plz direct me to the solution that would be great.

A little info,
Abit IS7 Motherboard
550watt maxtor Powersupply
SATA 10,000rpm HD
2Gig of Ram

That should be enough...thanks

ok, i finished reading the thread, wow what a dummy, i shoulda read a few lines above, but did the bios flash for the video card and he can now shut down, go threw smoke gernades in HL1, not lock up every 15mins.

Thank you so much...i've been beating my brain for about 4 months now....very nice find, how did u know to do that. An what exactly does changing those two variable due?...just out of curiosity.

i didnt read the whole thread as its become about 13 pages long. i have a bfg 6800 nu oc. the card worked fine for about 1 day until i ran 3d mark 2005 and then it froze and ever since i've been having these problems. i get streaks of lines across monitor and soemtiems the computer freezes and must be restarted. sometiems the computer boots up just fine and i can play counter-strike (open gl) for a few hours. if i open up far cry i can play for about 10 minutes before it starts getting lines at which point i can do ctrl+alt+del wait liek 2 seconds go back and play game for about 5 minutes before the problem just gets very bad and i have to close game. NFSU2 freezes on load if not in game within 2 sec before i can drive car. i called bfg and since i have life time warranty they said they'll replace it. but im still messing with it!

frankfan - yeah, i did it all just as u said..... Even though it gives funny readings, it DOES seem to have worked actually, i think I was hoping it would fix some other crashing problems I have. It is at least as solid as the software hack using powerstrip. Good work and thanks so much for your help, I would recommend this as the best solution so far for fixing faulty v9999's

Gamesmasta - Scroll up to frankfans last post above yours, this is the shiznit, helped me right out. Your problems sound exactly like mine (and everyone elses 😛). Careful using this fix though, as it will void your warranty. It really does work though 😀

I dont suppose anyone has heard any updates from nvidia or other manufacturers.... I emailed my buddy bruce again but he just wont respond 🙁 Class action anyone?

Frickea86,

My system has been golden since I did the HACK. I haven't had a single problem! Just do a search for my posts in this forum. There aren't that many and most of them were to this thread.

I get my 2 SATA drives today and get to install them in RAID 0...MORE SPEED!
