Seeing as how you are in the mid-range GPU market based off of your signature, I highly doubt you are in the market for a 4GB 680

Couples of year back people say that 2 GB of Vram is more than enough but now it’s common. There is no more price difference between both. So go for Gtx 680 4 GB.

Wrong.

Couple of years in the future you will need 16+ GB VRAM.

Big Deal???

The 680 isn't fast enough to be able to use 4GB VRAM. Even 7970 high oc can just barely use > 2GB VRAM and in very rare situations but can't saturate 3GB VRAM. By the time games need 3GB VRAM, 7970 stock > 680 OC but neither would be able to run the game comfortably at those settings.

Ditto!! HIGH RES texture packs and HIDef gaming!!! 4K soon

It's like I tell people when they buy HIFI stereo amps, you can always turn it down but never up when you have more clean power watts than not enough!!! :)

When 680 will need more ram it will need more gpu power to utilize it.I don't want to pay for stuff which will be completely underutilized in its lifetime.

I think you could say the same thing about the "standard" 680GTX. Finding the stock 680 GTX was like me trying to find a Cabbage Patch doll years ago for my one daughter. CRAZY!

OT but
qft. Same thing applies to subs as well. You can always turn down a larger sub but you cannot always turn up a smaller sub...

Ah memories of the days when they were out in the 80's! We used to collect the garbage pail kids cards... :)

Mars999: With the components in your sig (VERY NICE!) you should leap for that 3rd HP monitor, snag a 680GTX, enable Surround and you will be in Heaven.

From all benchmarks we've seen, with today's games, 2GB is plenty, no matter the resolution. We can try to predict the future, but take predictions with a grain of salt.

this. anyone who thinks 2gb vram is enough clearly hasnt tried hi-res texture, max eyecandy, and high levels of ssaa.

H isn't running mods. Bethesda's texture pack is a joke. Go to skyrimnexus and install 8-10 texture packs and you'll get single digit FPS /w 2GB @2560. I know because I've done it.

I'm playing a Stalker CoP Russian mod with a texture pack right now and my xfire 6950's are using ~1800MB each @2560.

2GB is only enough vram because games aren't getting high res textures (thank you xbox!). Once you start installing texture mods all bets are off.

This.

Even a game like dirt3 uses like 1.5gig VRAM easily, and that is barely a modern intensity equivalent game

You would think by now that most people would stop making absolute statements about program performance, such as "nothing can use over 2GB right now", when clearly that statement is false.
