The first two quotes say it all and that's great. The last quite concerns me. Why should I spend $230 if it's not going to look any better in all the "old" games I play like Medal of Honor, Serious Sam, Splinter Cell, Max Payne, Thief, etc?

Yes, I own Doom3 and Far Cry and will buy HL2 this week....I dunno about this card.

the 9800 pro in 3dmark03 gets about 4000-5000. The 6600gt gets around 7000-8000. There are some games where its not that much better, but others that rely alot on shaders youll see close to 80% more fps. This all off the top of my head, so its all appx. Great card for the money though.

edit: wow, in the time it took me finish typing my response, 3 other people already submitted theirs. Guess im getting slow....

A solid recommendation, thank you GNoad. :beer: 7000 in 3DM2003 is nothing to sneeze at. My current rig gets 5600 and change.

What I'm thinking about is the benefits of a newer architecture the 6600GT has over the 9800 Pro.

Wow, after reading the article fully and checking out the benchmark scores, there really isn't a comparison to be made.

I'll be getting the 6600GT.
 
If you want silent, Gigabyte makes a plain 6800 (not GT) for $300 that uses just a big heatsink and heatpipe. Look in AnandTech's 6600GT review for a comparison between the two (plain 6800 not this exact model).

Performance alone isn't worth the extra $60, but I'm considering it just to know I'll never have to deal with a whiny videocard fan.

I suppose I could just get a GT or Ultra and be done with it, but spending $400 - 700 on a video card that will be "slow" in a year just annoys me. I'd rather spend $200-300 for the same result 🙂
 
if you have a 9800 pro there is no valid reason to upgrade, unless the only game you play is doom 3, you are better of saving for a 6800 gt - x800 pro card, there is no reason to go with 6600 gt

$250 is the limit I'll spend on a videocard...even that is pushing it. Remember the GeForce 3? I spent like $325 on it when it first came out....then later on it was like $100. :roll: No more of that crap for me!

The 6600GT will be a nice upgrade for me. I have no intentions of buying a PCI-E mobo anytime soon.
 
MichaelD, you're looking at the same card I will likely buy after Christmas. What I'm looking forward to is being able to turn on AA and AF. I don't need super high rez (1600 x 1200!), 10 x 7 with some nice filtering would be great.

You still play Thief!? :Q

And HL2 is a blast. I just want to see it with all the eye candy on. 😀
 
Yeah, I spent that much for the original Geforce 2 to upgrade from a Voodoo3 2000 😱

Since then I've limited myself to $250 or less too, since this year's Ultra card is always slower than next year's $250 card. I'm only considering spending more for the silence.

Heheh, Thief2; I still have Thief, but don't play it anymore. 🙂 I have all my old games. Retail box of Quake3, etc. 😱

I can't turn on AA with my 9800Pro...it slows down to a crawl. I do play at fairly high settings in the game though. It still looks great; it's just that the newer crop of games bring it to it's knees. Plus, I'd like to see AA on my PC someday. :roll:

I agree. I don't think the peformance from a 9800 pro will be too significant. By the time the 9800 pro actaully starts to be come slow, there will be a new midrange card that will be better than the 6600GT.

4200? I'm so sorry for you. 😉 I own that card (it's in one of my Folding boxes) but when it was my gaming card it was very disappointing. First one upped and died; I tried overclocking it ONCE and it died. Replaced under warranty. 😉 The second one didn't OC either but had instability issues. :roll:

This will be a QUANTUM leap for you, Rike. 🙂

Mine has actually served me well. Right now I have the Memory OCed about 20% and the core about 10% (but I know it will go higher). However, I will be 😀 when I finally upgrade. The 6600GT is at a sweet price point right now.
 
is there a 256MB version of 6600GT somewhere out there? I think 128MB wont cut it for long. Hell some minimum requierments already listing cards with 64+MB.
 
i <3 my 9800 pro.

i bought it about 4 months ago when i was building my new system, at the time there was a sale on newegg, 9800 pro 256 meg for 243$$. runs HL2 max settings max antialiasing max af on 1024x768 (my 15 in. monitor's native res) at around 70 avg fps.

the 6600GT is a better buy. it will play newer games much better than the 9800p will. in older (2003 and earlier) games, 9800 pro and 6600GT are virtually the same.

Don't count on it dropping too far or too fast. Right now the AGP version of the 6600GT has no competition from ATI, which is kind of a bummer. The ATI match for the 6600GT won't be out until January at the earliest. (X700?)

On what CPU? The current high ends cards get a bit CPU bound. Not that the upgrade won't be amazing.
