Hi everyone. I bought one of those Nvidia GForce 4 ti4200 64MB as soon as they come out and it has been such a good card ever since i have owned it. It has played every game silky smooth. Im not one of those people who upgrade just to upgrade. A lot of people will go out and upgrade and spend money just because something is faster in the benchmarks. I really don't care about benchmarks. All i care is my games play with no hesitation. I play Unreal Tournament 2004 with all visual settings jacked up at 1280x1024x32 and it looks great and plays silky smooth. Oh btw, i have a AMD thuderbird 2100+ overclocked to a 2600+ level and 512MB of ram. Well like i said every game has played great until today when i installed Far Cry. I jacked up all the details on the video and OMG its so choppy i can hardly play the game. Looks like the Geforce 4 has met its match :). I guess its time for me to upgrade my video card because im definitly getting unplayable framerates here. Looks like im going to go out and get my a new 9800 pro.

...with a ti4200 in Farcry? I've got a P4 3.4C, 1GB RAM, and an FX 5900 and I wouldn't call what I get in Farcry "smooth". It's certianly playable, but that is at 10x7 without the details maxed.

I suggest ignoring Far Cry for a year and enjoying the hardware you currently have. If you must play HL2 and Doom3 then upgrade at that time. Don't upgrade for a single game when you can enjoy it in a year on a budget graphics card. The game crawls even on my 9700PRO. It's ahead of it's time. It needs more hardware than is currently available to run fully maxxed out at 60fps unfortunately.

I would suggest ignoring Sickbeast :). FarCry is an awesome game. When the demo came out, I still had my GF3 Ti200. That card had served me well, like your GF4 had served you well. But When FarCry hit the shelf, I upgraded to a Radeon9800 Pro, Just for that game. And it's worth it! I still can't turn all the visuals on at high res, but FarCry looks gorgeous even at 1024x768 with everything on high. And yes, upgrade your RAM. I had 512 MB and it was swapping to disk very often. I upgraded to 1 GB and the swapping went away.

No offense sickbeast.

LOL none taken Jayavarman.

I still think he would enjoy the game just as much in a year though. Upgrading for a single game is like buying a Porsche that you can only drive on one road. Granted, it may be the road that you take to work, but it still is only one road. :p

I would imagine that his GF4 runs every other game out there just fine though. If it aint broke, don't fix it. Far Cry is good but it's far from "revolutionary" IMO. Graphically it's spectacular but I found the gameplay too slow and choppy to be fully appreciated. I'm forced to run it at 1280x1024 because of my LCD though. YMMV.

I would *much* rather play the game as it was intended to be enjoyed, a year from now, on a rediculously powerful computer. I find less than 60fps irritating though, so again, YMMV. :p

My AMD 1900+, 512 PC2100, GF4 Ti 4400 plays Far Cry fine at 1024x768x32 medium settings. No AA or AF. It looks good enough, but I have no interest in Far Cry, so I guess it doesn't really matter.

Your right sickbeast my geforce4 has served me well. For how long it has lasted me; it was a steal but i think im at a good point to upgrade now. You can find 9800 pro for under $200 and this is a very good video card. I am in the process of upgrading the rest of my system also. I just ordered an AMD 64 and MB. So this will also be part of the upgrade. I can't afford to get everything in one swoop. So 512 more MB or RAM is definitly on my list but i probably won't buy it for another month. On the wait & upgrade thing i might be saying that in a year....umm ill wait because the next generation of video cards will come down in a year. We all know when we got into computers we were going to be constantly upgrading. I seem to upgrade my MB & Processor about every year. I wait a little longer on the video card. I remember when i bought 512MB of ram that was considered to be a ton of ram when i bought it now its average. So we can always wait for the hotest stuff to drop in price before we upgrade but we will be constantly waiting because there will always be something better. Playing games isn't my MAIN thing i do with my computer but i do enjoy it. My main focus is programming. If anyone one here has run Visual Studio . Net you know you need a relatively peppy computer for this or you will be bogged down. I also run SQL Server 2000 and Oracle 9i. Of course i shut these down when i play games ;).

I think you are on the right path for upgrades. Wait longest on the video card sense the prices will soon be forced to drop when companies like Bestbuy have a 5950 priced over a 6800. Also it is good to wait because video cards tend to be the bulk of the money these days for best bang for the buck. Also, the newest cards are a big jump and are at their highest prices right now. They should also fall if that is a potential consideration of yours.

Same here! I've been playing UT2004/Painkiller and those run just fine for me on my GF4. I'll upgrade when How-Long 2 and Delayed 3 are out :D:beer: Far cry isn't my barrel of monkeys, but it's a good game.

lol Sonic. Rest assure though that the Video Game Industry will be changing to format games for higher standards. We are at the beginning of a new tier and I'm excited to what game dvelopers will have to offer. Hell, just check out the rumored spec's of the new console systems let alone the PC games.

Cept I have a 5700 Ultra.... not a ti 4200 ;) he's gonna upgrade his card anyway, why not add more RAM?
