Geforce 4 TI 4200, more memory better or faster ram?

GeForce4 Ti 4200 64Mb DDR (250/500) $179 and GeForce4 Ti 4200 128Mb DDR (250/444)

Is the 128 one better to get or the 64 one? The 128 one is 56 mhz slower is that more critical than 32 mb of extra ram? Please give some insights.. it would help alot thanks!

Im sure there are other people out there wondering the same thing.. will the experts please help us out thanks !

All the reviews seem to indicate that faster is better. I'm going to be buying the 64MB RAM one.

just FYI, the preproduction 128 mb card at tomshardware hit 310/550. if you check out [ H ]ardOCP's new preview, you'll see that jediknight2 takes a huge dump at 1280x1024 with 64 MB of ram. i think that for hi rez in upcoming games you are better off with 128 MB of ram, even if the ram is clocked slower.

If you want to OC your card, the 128 meg version would be better. If you don't, then the 64. In my worthless opinion of course.

I looked at the review at Hard OCP and based on the benchmarks, I think I'll be getting the 64mb version. It's a little cheaper, and it was faster than the 128mb version in all resolutions I think. We'll all have to see what the final product looks like though.

I think it really depends on how you like to run your games. If you like to run with FSAA on, then the more memory the better. If you like your games to run as fast as they can, however, then the faster memory is obviously an advantage.

Here is something to consider... Recall back to when the GeForce 3 Ti 200 made it's debut. Sure the first few were packing the 5.0ns ram that would safely run the default ram speed of 200MHz (400MHz effective). Now it is actually hard to actually find a Ti 200 that doesn't have 4.0ns ram or faster. 4.0ns should be able to reach an effective clock rate of 500MHz, matching the Ti 500. I think it is a safe bet that the ram of the Ti 4200 with 128MB will be just as fast as the 64MB version, it is all a matter of whether or not you want to take the risk of over-clocking. I know I would go for the 128MB version...

i dont know much about the situation, but with the future in mind...i think more would be better


and not like you will notice a difference anyways, the only thing that will improve is your 3dmark, you wont be able to tell a difference with your eye between the two, that is...unless it starts lagging and chopping up due to lack of ram, which is why i would get the 128mb version

Get the faster $179 card. 64 MB cards still do quite well in a lot of games with texture compression enabled and you'll notice the difference in memory bandwidth that the 64 MB card has over the 128 MB card.

I was going to get the 64 megs version before I saw the preview at Hardocp. It really convinced me to get the 128 megs version, I don't play games that need really high fps but I want to be abe to use AA and play at a high resolution. I also think the 128 megs is more future proof and that the 20 bucks will pay off in the long run (I keep my videocards since I'm not a big gamer anyway, well Civilization III doesn't need a GeForce4....)

Just my opinion... by the way, do you notice a 200 vs 195 fps in Q3... I don't =), but I see the difference between jagged edges and smooth ones

Hey it's Aukatah again. I just responded to another post where you stated "I'm glad the gf4 ti4200 isn't out yet, cause then I wouldn't have enough money for my driver's license'-lol. Anyways, I think I might have changed my mind about this too. I think I want the 128mb version now. I think future games will require more memory, and I don't think overclocking the 444mhz to a 64mb speed(500mhz) would be too tough. We'll see what the street prices are. $20 is a big difference for a jobless teen going to school.

I'd just like to revise my previous statement in this thread to:

If you're planning to overclock, get the 128 MB board.
If you're planning to run at stock speeds, get the 64 MB board.

I'd go with the 64 meg one
Why? well if you think about the GeForce 3 card all having 64meg and the G2 having 32meg
you can see that most, if not all games will only require a max of 32meg. The reasonn for this
is that the makers of games need to produce for the masses.
My VooDoo with 16meg was fine, then a GeForce2mx with 32meg was great....and now I have a
Geforce 3 Ti200 (o/c to 250/540 no xtra cooling) with 64meg yet for all this extra ram most games
play the same.
What I am saying is I feel that the ram thing is a selling point only as games only need 32meg so 64meg
is over kill........and I'm not using my GeForce 2mx anymore because the Chip is too slow not the amount
of memory, and I bet the GeForce 3 is replaced before games require 128meg.
All the benchmarks I see result in less than 2% increase in frame rates with 128 over 64meg
bring that down to 30 frames when things get serious and you are talking about a difference of 0.6 frames!
Perhaps they should give you the extra 64meg as DDR ram for the motherboard?

If $20 is the difference I would say go for the 128mb card, although the card is slightly slower I am betting that the extra memory is going to help in newer games. <whinge mode> blimmin uk, bet the cards going to be £179 at least, and an extra £20 for the 128mb version

I'm actually leaning towards getting the 128mb one... what alot of you said sounded right, like in the near somewhat future games will require more RAM and in the long run my card will last longer then the 64 one..... it is only 20 bux more expensive...

It is a tough choice but i really dont know what the faster ram does? like is it really important?

Anyone have an idea of how fast you think i'll be able to OC the 4200 until u'll need fans and stuff?

I have the Visiontek Xtacy GF4 Ti4400 with 128 Mb and the stock clock speeds are 275/550. I have been easily able to OC to 290/580. I love the 128 mb at high res.

But its only 20 bux cheaper... like i mean dont u think its a good investment if later on u'll need a128mb card? the only problem is.. is the memory too slow to perform well on games later on that require 128 mb...

Like anandtech's review said, you can overclock the 128MB DDR version, you can't put an additional 64MB on the 64MB DDR card.
