I actually just bought a VisionTek XTASY GeForce 4 MX420 for $99 at CompUSA and was wonderingif I should take it back and get a better card? I am currently running a PIII 800/133 - 256MB - 32MB TNT2 (not even Ultra) so this card is truely an upgrade. But my buddy said that this G4 MX420 was a crappy card and I should just bite it and spend the extra money on a G4 Ti 4200. I am not really a hardcore gamer at all, just wanted a video card update. What are you opinions on this?

If I were you, I'd consider returning that video card in favor of the Radeon 8500. It would cost you less than your GF4 MX 420, and it is far more cost effective than a GF4 Ti4200 right now.

Well if your not a hardcore gamer and dont mind playing games at lower resolutions, you could just stick with it. BUT,if you ever do see a newer game at the store that requires some power, you may be watching a slide show. You always have the option of turning down some of the settings to make a game run better anyways.

If you don't game at all,you could just keep it and it there no issue here at all. I built my sister a computer just recently and she doesn't game so I got her a ATI Radeon le for like 40 bucks and she has great 2d and does have the option to play many games but just not latest and greatest and playem at high resolutions.

I'm due for a video card upgrade myself and if I was going to spend 100 bucks,I would just buy it on-line at Newegg or somewhere and get a Radeon 8500 or Geforce 3TI 200 for that amount so If I do want to game and keep the settings up there,I would be ok.

Your processor is actually not a bad match for that card but theres alot more people on this board that knows more about this than I do.

Bottom line:you could have gotten more for your money but if it has been doing everything that you want it to do,just keep it and don't worry about it and enjoy.

The MX420 is the black sheep of the GF4 MX family. Actually, IMHO, within the entire GF4 MX family, only the MX440 is worth considering, since its in a unique price point with no other direct competitors. The MX420 is simply too slow, hampered by its slow SDR memory, and will be outperformed by even a lowly GF2 GTS card. The MX460, while faster than the GF2 Ultra in most cases and even the GF3 Ti200 in some very rare cases, is all in all an inferior card to the GF3 Ti200 yet costs more than comparable AND better performing/featured cards like the GF3 Ti200, Radeon 8500 and Radeon 8500LE. It also approaches the price of the GF4 Ti4200.

So, if you're strapped on a $50 budget, get a GF2 GTS/Pro/Ti/Ti200/Ultra/V/whatever, as long as its not a GF2MX, but if you have a bit more to spend, say $70-80, get the GF4 MX440. If you have $100 to spend, get either than GF3 Ti200, or better yet the Radeon 8500 or 8500LE. The GF4 Ti4200 might be too much for your budget.
