Geforce 3 Vs. Radeon 9700 Pro

Agree with Sickbeast. I had most features set to high in U2 (All but shadows) and hardly every dropped below 30fps at least in feel.

And 1024 x 768 looks really good. I do admit though that U2 could benefit more from a higher res or fsaa (Only to reduce jaggies on certain maps).

But as far as cards go the G3 should be fine for now. Wait till the next cards come out and the 9700 will be at least $100 cheaper if not more and can even upgrade to the 9800 or if your rich the 9900 Pro.

i concur

Oh it's a dud alright! If it does sell well, it will be on name brand recognition. The world is full of "sheep"! 😉 The hardware itself is very much a dud. 6 months late and way underpowered for the price, not to mention loud. The 9800 will take back the speed crown only weeks after the FX hits the streets! No doubt about it...nVidia dropped the ball this round...Big Time!
If it wasn't for that pesky 9700pro nVidia would have gotten away with its "diabolical" plan to release a slighly better card then the GF4 in the fall of 2002....then a slightly better card then that in the spring of 2003...all while charging a full upgrade price of course. Oh how times have changed!! 😀

oh yeah and the 9700pro is night and day better then the GF3.

david vs. goliath....

But david beat goliath, while the geforece 3 has no chance of beating the 9700 pro.

And speaking of quality, do you use smoothvision on the 9700 series cards with Unreal 2 and other games, does it look better without the performance hit or what?

Before you upgrade I suggest asking yourself, what will my Geforce III not do that requires an upgrade? Not to mention the expected price drop on Ati cards in the next few days.

Is this absolute will there be a price drop in the next week?
What about GF4ti cards will they drop 2?

I upgraded my system from a GF3Ti200@Ti500 to a 9700PRO and the difference, wow.

Just so you know majewski9, the R350 is officialy called the 9800 not 9900, theres info on it on rage3d news.
There are also the new names of the RV280, RV350, and R350(9800).

wow great! thanks for letting me know! I was only making a guess! No one except people at ATI know there naming convention so we still dont know 100 percent what it will be called. Heck there will probaly be a Radeon 9900 as well. Geez lay off it you geek!

Dont know what to say then cause your system is faster then mine and I didnt have a problem with the game, but like I said I didnt bother using the display to see the fps cause the times it was slow it wasnt bad enough to worry about it for me.

don't tell people that man! it may be just fine for you and that is just fine but in a cpu limited game upgradeing ones videocard does not help much.

let me make this clear : UPGRADEING YOUR VIDEOCARD FOR UNREAL2 WILL NOT GET YOU BETER PREFORMACE

sure you can crank up aa and ff but you can't stop it from chugging like the little engine that thought it could.

heres a link were i illustrate my point (note i am reeferkills)

ok with that said, MrLips, i upgrded from a geforce3 to a 9700pro right after they came out. worth every penny. 🙂

however, they seem to be still going for about the same number of pennies now and the new radeon should be comeing soon to replace the 9700pro at that price, so knowing that i supose it is your call. 😉

I wasnt being awkward, nore im i geeky.

Would a geek by a striker for a football team? no, not american football, proper football, or as you`ll probably call it "soccer".

Anyway, its been found that the 9800 is the proper name, both from a press release on a german website, and traces of this name in the latest Cat3.1 drivers.

Jeez, dont take it personally, i just thought i`d tell you incase you didnt know.

TheSnowman I couldnt disagree more with you on the upgrade thing sorry to say. You WILL get better performance in Unreal 2 with the Radeon and every other game out right now. There is no way in hell a G3 will perform as well as the Radeon, it is the fastest card on the market today so how can the G3 be just as good for Unreal 2? As for the game being cpu dependant he is running an Athlon 2100 so he is fine on the cpu speed IMHO.

Ditto.
Hes not exactely CPU limted, and if you read the readme file that comes with Unreal2, it says that the biggest performance increase comes from a newer, more capable video card.

Quote from Unreal2 Readme

2.6 Considering upgrading?

For people considering upgrading their machines, here are some tips based
on our experience running Unreal II on a variety of machines:

1 The biggest performance gain in Unreal II comes from
having a state of the art graphics chip.

2 The next upgrade that tends to improve Unreal II
performance is upgrading your CPU.

3 Finally, lots of RAM helps. With memory prices continually falling,
it's now reasonably affordable to upgrade to 384 MByte of system
memory.

I just made this upgrade (well, at least I have the card on the way - just got a NIB retail ATi 9700 Pro card for $305 shipped from Fleabay), and I will let you know my results once I install it. I am upgrading from a Visiontek GF3ti200.

unreal2 on a 9700pro

note that is 640x480 super ugly mode, i wound up takeing the game back to the store.

The link doesnt concern me I only care about how the game ran for ME. Like I said so it slowed down once and a while big deal not enough to warrant any worries. If thre game ran slow at all times I would agree with you but I cant agree cause I played the game already. I guarantee if I put my G3 in it wouldnt even come close to the Radeon, thats like saying I would get the same scores in 3DMark2001se with the G3 and the radeon.

well i imagine the game ran the same for you as it did for me though. please don't make me get into another one of these dissusions. the last one got fairly heated and took way to much effort end in a civil fasion when it was finaly agreed to be a simple differnce of openion:

feel free to check it out here, and fyi i am reefer kills in those posts.

point being is that upgradeing a video card for unreal2 is simply going to make it look beter, it is not going to make it run any smoother. if you think it is fine the way it is then i am glad you can enjoy the game but for those of us who don't i would rather not see them go out and buy a new videocard for the wrong reason. so i am only trying to help, please do not give me a hard time for it. 🙂
