GeForce 3 Ti 300

The GeForce 3 in my file server is ridiculously loud. Needless to say I don't do anything 3D related on my server. Would it be safe to unplug the fan on it??

No, unless you have great cooling in that part of the case. If you really can't stand the noise, I suppose a larger passive sink would do. But running on stock heatsink without fan is bad idea.

This may sound pretty ghetto but my little bro's computer has a ti4200 that was pretty loud (high pitched vacuum noise) and all i did was super glue an 80mm fan onto the heatsink and unplugged the fan. Its been working perfectly for about a year.. and he does game.

Using WD40 to lube a dry bearing fan would be a disaster.

A noisy fan becasue of bearing wear needs replacing not lubing as you guys put it.

Try oiling it rather than wd 40 just a tiny drop will do it. OR you could probably just replace the fan on it for a couple of dollars and should be right.

gf3s can be fit with the original vga silencer. but i'd just unplug the fan. that chip is doing pretty much nothing in 2d mode.

even though we all have used wd40 as a lube and it says its a lube on the can.
I would recommend againstusing it as a lube!!

What should I use to lube it up with? WD 40?

yep.

WD-40 is not lubrication. It is in fact nothing but kerosene, cleverly marketed for years as a cleaner. If you lube bearing surfaces with WD-40 you may as well not lube them at all.

drop of household oil . . i do this w/e a fan starts 'failing' and can typically get a few more months out of them . . babied one along for years this way till I finally gave up and said it wasn't worth it 😛

Agreed - and WD-40 can be bad for plastic.

I've heard that sewing machine oil is a good idea for fans because it's supposed to be gentle stuff, and so it won't cause more harm than good.

I think I'll just unplug it until it dies!!!

Download the coolbits reg hack from a site like guru3d. Underclock the card as low as she'll go and still have decent perf in windows.
