Heyas guys,

I ran accross a very strange thing on my GF3 card (Asus v8200).
The temperature of the processor on the Geforce card is between 48C and 55C normally, BUT I noticed that when I leave my computer run for some hours while downloading the temperature gets up to 60+C. I cant explain this.
The monitor goes to stand-by and the only program running is a FTP proggy or Download Accelerator. As I return after a few hours to enjoy my freshly downloaded warez I see the temp of the CPU on the card on 60 to 65, but as soon as I start to move my mouse and my monitor pops back on it starts dropping right away back to 48C.
Any of you guys have any idea whats the cause of this high temperature during Idle time for the videocard? It only seems to happen as my monitor jumps to stand-by (black screen).
Im affraid the card will become overheated if I leave the PC on overnights while downloading, so I aint doing that at the moment.

I hope you guys can give me a clue on the cause and maybe check if your GF3 card does the same thing.

Greetz,

I'd remove the reference to w@:{z if i were you...

Stick a case fan near it or make sure the case is well ventilated.

If the fans were the problem, then I would expect the CPU of the videocard to be this warm all the time. but it isnt. It gets warmer as the monitor jumps to stand-by.
I dont think this is a fan problem.

If you can afford a GF3 you certainly can afford to buy your software.

...Or did mommy and daddy buy your PC? :p

Djeez,

I spend approx 1000 US dollars every year on software. I have every right to try before I buy. I deleted every game I didnt like within a day or two and bought every single game I liked (Wizardry 5-7, Diablo 1/2, Deathkeep, Might and Magic 5,6,7, Championship Manager Season 95 through 01, Shadow President, Cossacks, Everquest all disks, Total Annihilation, Gangsters, etc. etc. etc.)
I am not gonna spend 40 dollar everytime to just check a game out. And I certainly wouldnt spend more on games if I couldnt download none. Its a discussion without an end. My oppinion is that if games would cost half as much as nowadays they would sell 4 times as many.

But this thread is going the wrong way. Lets bring the topic back to the problem and talk about software piracy in another thread if needed:)

I don't have a GF3, but those temps seem a bit high. I read that the Asus has a good heatsink on it, but you might want to consider replacing the stock fan with a blue orb or something. BTW, did you get the 3D glasses with your card? How do you like them?

Didnt try the glasses yet. Ill tell ya later, but I certainly liked the video capturing options:)

As I mentioned before, I dont understand why the cpu could become warmer when its almost idle. I dont think that has anything to do with the fan. Another fan would just bring down the overall temperature but wouldnt take care of the problem described. Im just curious if anyone can explain this.

Your rights are governed by the Law. And according to the Law, you don't have the right to "try before you buy". Who do you think you are kidding? Anyway, this is a different topic alltogether.

Dazlpro, sounds like you could use more ventilation in your case, look in the ForSale forum for people selling case fans. I have a 120 mm fan that sucks in outside air right over my GF2 card during hot weather - it really makes a difference.

Many of the better games do have a perfectly good demo they offer for download. This is the way they offer the 'try before you buy' option. Piracy will get you burned, maybe not today, maybe not tomorrow, but eventually you will get burned. Besides, remember that your freedom is one of the most precious things you own - don't trade it for a piece of crap software.

Just some sage wisdom from an old fart software designer who has been burned by pirates.
Don't steal from developers, we have kids to feed.

Technically, the law allows him to "try before you buy" only if you get rid of the software within 24 hours after he downloads an alleged "pirated" software. Personally I have never downloaded any warez myself because I believe developers earn every penny for their hard work! The more money they earn, the better the games will be due to a bigger budget!! :)

Hehe, Yeah Ill think twice next time before I use the W***** word again. Thanks for the advice.
Ill try a bigger case fan and see if that helps. Im suspecting the GF3 fan is doing less turns as the monitor jumps to stand-by.

Is there a proggy to watch the history of the rps of the fan? My current proggy (smartmon) only tells me how fast the fan is turning at the moment and not how fast it ran in the past few hours.

Rather than download w*****, and since I can't afford to be buying lots of commercial software, I just use GPLed software. Hey, it's free, legal, and usually good.

I placed 2 extra fans in my case but the problem is still there:( The average temperature went down with 5C, but the temperature on the GF3 CPU still is 10C higher when windows goes to stand-by... I tried disabling all power management options in Windows, but that didnt help also.
Somehow, after some minutes of non-mouse movement the monitor turns to black and windows goes to stand-by anyway.
Im gonna try and replace the fan on the GF3 card tomorrow. Ill let yáll know if that helps any.

hi dazlpro,
i read your post and tested the issue in my computer last night.
i don't experience that effect you described. well, i didn't do downloads, just left the computer turned on. but when i got up this morning temp was as usual in idle, means 51°C.
by the way 55°C is the max temp my v8200 reaches.
i hope this is a little help.
i'd email asus.

Thanx Wasnlos,

Now I know it isnt a problem on all V8200 cards. Ill contact Asus for my problem indeed. I hope they arent gonna make me exchange it for another one, hehe. I travelled 300+ miles to get one. (Couldnt wait any longer, so phoned all pc stores in Holland. Only one had it in stock:))

*Dazl returns to the land of Everquest, waiting for those dudes at Sir-TEch to finally finish Wizardry 8 so I can cancel my Everquest account:)*
