I recently bought an Alienware system, and after a re-install of Windows Me, I noticed that my scores in 3DMark 2000 dropped by more than 70%. Here are my system specs:
AMD Athlon Thunderbird 1GHz - Socket A
MSI K7T Pro - VIA KT133 Chipset - With latest AWARD BIOS installed
256 MB Virtual Channel SDRAM
GeForce 2 GTS w/64 MB
SB Live! X-Gamer
Pioneer 16x DVD / 40x CD-ROM
34GB IBM Deskstar & 20.4GB WD Expert HDs (The 20.4GB HD was added by me).
Now here's what happened.
When I first recieved my computer and I benchmarked my system using 3DMark2000, I received scores close to 7000.
Well, a few days after I got my machine, I reformatted, and did a complete reinstall of Window Me. I made sure to update with all the latest drivers:
VIA 4 in 1 Driver - v4.24a - (AGP VxD in Turbo Mode & VIA INF Driver 1.02, at least that's what was checked off during the install)
Detonator 3 Drivers - v6.26 (Leaked Beta)
Live! Ware Software & Drivers - v3.0
I benched my system using 3DMark 2000 (the default benchmark), and I got a whopping score of about 1500! Now I was shocked. That was a severe performance degradation there!
Well, essentially I did another reinstall of Windows Me, but went back to the Detonator v6.20 drivers Alienware techs recommended on their site. Another clean install of Windows Me, and again, all the latest drivers for each of my components.
VIA 4 in 1 Driver - v4.24a - (AGP VxD in Turbo Mode & VIA INF Driver 1.02, at least that's what was checked off suring the install)
Detonator 3 Drivers - v6.20
Live! Ware Software & Drivers - v3.0
Benchmarked again, still the same result. About 1500 3DMarks. Sub-par perfomance.
Alienware Tech Support has been unable to help me so far (Big surprise), so I'm turning to any of you guys. Does anyone have any thoughts, ideas, or recommendations? Am I not supposed to use the VIA 4 in 1 Drivers? Maybe I changed something in the BIOS that is causing this performance degradation? Or is there a setting somewhere that I have no idea about?
Thanks,
Chris Flynn
