Still pricing out parts- notice that the Geforce 256 is half the price of the Geforce 2, with everything else being equal. Whats the $100 worth of difference?

what games do u play?...what games are u planning on playing in the near future (ile. before another vid card upgrade)...

i personally wouldn't pay another 100 for the gf2 since i don't games that need so much horsepower...

i'd also consider other vid cards other than the geforce SDR to be better bang for the buck (i.e. radeon LE) and in roughly the same price range.

Well the systems are going for a school, so not expecting much in the way of games to be played- nothing to intensive, I suspect

speaking of geforce 2's, how do the cards rate against an ati radeon 32mb ddr (not le or ve or whatever)?

gf2 will beat the radeon 32mb in any 16-bit benchmark, and takes it most 32-bit benches as well....but some are pretty close.

the LE can be easily hacked into a standard DDR via bios flash or registry edit and powerstrip overclock.

if i were u, i'd surely go radeon LE for far clearer/crisper 2D, especially in high resolutions, as well as better 3d performance...

otherwise, go regular Geforce SDR over GF2...also, my asus v6600 geforce SDR clocks from 120core/166mem to 160core/212mem...though i added my own heatsink and fan combo...i probably got lucky as well...

Why are you buying nvidia cards for a school computer. Go with some type of ATI solution. They will cost less and give them better 2d quality which I'm sure they are looking for.

ATI is often overlooked b/c it's in the middle of Anandtech review charts. It's still a top performer as far as FPS, but it offers so much more visual quality than any geforce brand besides the new GF3! Plus it's dirt cheap. I just got an ATI Radeon 64mb DDR VIVO for $149; WoW. I have a K7-1333 and I can play virtually everythying at 1600X1200X32.

you know the gf2 is a great caard but my old prophet gf 256 i gave to a friend and it will run any game he throws at it...so if your not a gaming freak adn the 100 bucks would be better spent some where else go the 256

Guys, don't forget that the 256 is pretty nasty when it comes to small power supplies. Since this is going into a school's machine, the odds are the PS will be minimal, meaning that a GF 256 probably isn't a wise choice.

virge, u've no clue...

i've run gf + slot a athlon classics (which i have now) on generic 250watt psus w/out a hitch...

people crying lack of PSU power often just take other's (who are clueless) word for it...it isn't true.

I've run similar rigs on 230watt psus...a lot will also tell u quality of rated output, which is generally true as well...

psu power is rarely concern, especially w/ anything over 250watt.
