Geforce 2 gts- Time to dump it?

I have been running my computer for about 2 years. Ever since I built it, I have had some problems with registry errors.

it is an Asus P3v4x with a slot adaptor card and a PIII 667, with a Hercules/guillemot Geforce 2GTS 64meg, and an IBM deskstar 34xp 20.5 gig HD, Soundblaster live value card.

When I first built it, it seemed to run fine except that sometimes the video card would apparently not initialize... NO VIDEO IMAGE.

I re-seated the card, updated drivers, that seemed to go away, but has rarely occurred since.

I often have registry errors on startup, sometimes many in succession. I recently downclocked the CPU to 620 mhz, it seems SLIGHTLY more stable, I have not run it enough to be certain.
I also added another 256 megs of ram, I tried it with just the new stuff first, in case the ram was bad. No change.

I am going to Re-build the software from the ground up, AGAIN. This will be at least the 4th time. Problem rears its ugly head within a week or two.

Video is set at 200mhz processor, 333 mhz memory.

When playing Unreal, I experience visual defects in the walls, certain sections will not be right, kind of messed up shimmering color.

When playing Age of Empires II, the game sometimes locks up, either kicking me out to desktop or locking up the whole system. This seems to be more prevalent in the late parts of the game, when lots of action going on.

Dungeon keeperII also locks up, sometimes even re-boots the system. When it locks up, it usually shows a small section of the lower screen, then the rest of the screen is black, computer locked up completely.

Railroad tycoon II locks up also, same system.

Another problem I have noted all along is that in unreal the brightness levels will change from one boot up to the next, It usually gets darker, and I have had to run brighter than the default setting. A few weeks ago the brightnes suddenly jumped up, and the image looked wierd, I blew out the fan due to heavy dust in the house, seemed to get better. This problem went away, but...

Often I will notice that the color of the background on my desktop has shifted from blue green to a bright bilious green. I have the desktop set up with the cargo net in the background, and it looks really wierd.

Is my video card trashed?

THanks for any help you can give.

Keep it for now. It'll be a waste to buy a Geforce 4 now since NV30 or the R300 is just a few months from arrival.

Green-color shifting on your desktop? Sounds like a monitor related problem. I had this experience when I was using a school's Compaq 17" monitor. Every 15 minutes, the entire screen would turn green. I suggest trying your system on another monitor.

I can get access to another card, I don't have one myself, and since I got married a few months ago the money is a little tight. :)

I had the monitor rebuilt several months ago after it failed, apparently a couple transistors burnt out or some such. Repair cost 1/2 as much as replacement, so...

I can get another monitor, it just won't be a 19 inch :(

I'll try both things, but I am also going to get the newest drivers for the card.

Thanks for the advice. I'll keep checking back, but with work and family it will probably be almost a week before I can really do anything about it. :(

ge228: Welcome to the Anandtech forums.

I agree with what CubicZirconia said, Try a new videocard out. If you still get the problems, then its something else, if its fixed, then you know its the card.

And why am I welcoming someone who's been here 2 years?

Haha, the number of posts fooled me.

My mistake, welcome "Back" to the Anandtech Forums. ;)

What! You can afford to get married but not upgrade your 'puter?

Get your priorities straight, mon! ;)

Oh, yeah. Congratulations to you and your bride.

Ok, this time I won't hit enter.

Thanks for the good wishes.

Last 3 times booted up, no problems.

The monitor image did freak out on me thoughjust before I shut it down last night, the image became compressed all around, mostly horizontally. Probably the repair was not 100%

Now my wife tells me that she was trying to play Railroad tycoon II earlier today, and the game crashed 2 times on her, requiring reboot both times. At least one registry error in there.

AARGH !!! I need an Exorcist! Maybe I will try holy Water!

And then there will be MORE next gen cards a few months after the NV30 and R300 drop to a reasonable price. Then the cycle will continue AGAIN...or are you gonna keep putting it off? :p

Actually, just upgrading the videocard in that system won't help much. It will be bottlenecked by the processor and motherboard.
