Okay, that’s the entire forum, but anyway…

Back in the 70s, there was an American restaurant chain that had “pewter” mugs with glass bottoms. Anyone recall the chain? Shakey’s?

I understand that the mugs were a fad in England but unusual in the US.

Never been to the restaurant, but I wouldn't say the tankards were unusual here. That was one of the 'big event' type gifts at the time. Groom gift, graduation, maybe some corporate bullshit...

edit:
for the chain, Steak & Ale seemed like a likely candidate, but an image search isn't bringing up pewter.

I think the pewter was really galvanized steel or weathered aluminum.

I don't think I've ever seen a Shakeys. I made an image search, but the results didn't seem right for the cup description. Seemed like it should've been some kind of 'ye olde' place.

Pewter mugs haven't been a thing in the UK for a few decades. I have both my grandads mugs. It used to be a thing that you'd keep your mug behind the bar of your local and they'd have it filled by the time you got to the bar. They very much weren't something anyone could use!
Pub culture isn't the same since it became 4 or 5 quid a pint!

Reminds me of the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy radio play:

BARMAN:
There you are sir, six pints.

FORD PREFECT:
Keep the change.

BARMAN:
What from a fiver? Thank you sir!

Used to love going to Shakey's in South Lake Tahoe. Still went to the one in Oroville, CA when I was up that way.
