Geeting an old 79' benz Diesel

The old Benz diesels while being good cars are basically worthless. A similar car in perfect shape wouldnt be worth more than a few thousand dollars. I suggest looking to see what a better condition car would cost. You might find you could just buy a different one is better shape for much less that it would cost to get that one up to decent shape.

Agreed. You could easily spend $5000 on bodywork alone for that car. Plus, Mercedes parts are astronomical. It costs just as much to fix a 1979 Mercedes as it does to fix a 2004.

Over at Rennlist there's a saying: "Nothing in the world is as expensive as a free Porsche.". That applies to Mercedes and BMW as well. If you're looking to restore one, the cheapest route is always to get the best example you can afford.
