I was gonna make a post in that thread about that isn't any different from someone charging XX dollars to add/change memory...I went to geeksquad's site to see what their prices were ($89 to install hardware???)...all i can say is :Q

sample of their pricing:

$59 - Single Title Software Install (AV, AS, OLB. Etc.) **
From tax preparation to hobbies ? Geek Squad will install a utility or productivity software. Service excludes operating system installation. Software not included.

$89 - Software Suite Install (Suite, MSFT Office, DI Suites, Etc.) **
Service includes the repair, troubleshoot, or install one software suite (ex. Office, Norton Internet Security, etc.) and the installation of all critical updates for the software suite. Agents will also test the software suite for proper functionality. Software not included.

$89 - Hardware Install (upgrade/service) **
Agents are standing by to install any one PC compatible internal or external hardware device onto your desktop or laptop. Graphics/video card, memory, hard drives, and optical drives are examples of what this service includes. Hardware not included.

$129 - Operating System Install
Installation of the latest version of Microsoft® Windows that best suits you and your computer. Agents will install all critical system updates. Software not included.

$129 - We can provide an estimate for insurance purposes. Agents will provide you with an accurate estimated cost for repair(s) needed. WTH is this???

I know that no one forces you to use them, but for people who don't know any better...is this how much other places charge to do the same services???

They're providing a service that people will pay for. What's the problem?

Absolutely correct. Free market FTW...

Is the last sentence of my post not displaying or something?

i didn't say it was a problem...i have never paid to have any of these services done so I was sticker shocked to say the least...

if these are the prices that the market will bear, then I am in the wrong business...

The labor service industry bills like that. It's normal. Plumbers, electricians, home theater installers, computer techs... I'd say $50/hr on the low end for basic labor items to $120/hr on the high end for specialized work.

The right market will pay very well for almost any service. I few years back I got a call asking if I would hang christmass lights on a house, I said sure thing, $85 an hour, 4 hour min, and you supply the lights. Did the job, got paid, then got paid a second time when I took them down.
I've spent an entire day hanging pictures and replacing light bulbs, and the home owner was happy to pay the $680 bill.
The Geek Squad prices look pretty fair to me.

i don't know where you got those prices from but most of them were incorrect, I correct the ones in bold. see here

As reguards to your bolded statement, may times after a lightning strike, flood, or other event an insurance company will require you to get an estimate on how much it would be to fix your computer, tv etc so they can decide to either have it fixed or replaced, and many times the insurance company will pay for this estimate.

Present. Girls laptop is acting up, most definately hardware related as some water was spilled on it.

I do not have the knowledge to run a full battery of tests to acccurately determine how to fix it. So we're just goint to give it to best buy to say "how much to fix."

then we can decide if it's worth it to fix it or not.

I feel sorry for the people who need help installing software. :( But as long as I'm not the one doing the installation, who cares.

Do you feel sad when you pay a plumber to fix something that isn't difficult to do (but you lack the knowledge to do yourself?) Just because you know how to do something doesn't mean the public at large does. Also, there is an overhead for offering this kind of service, they would lose money if they were charging $15/hr...

Your probably better off price-wise going to an independent shop. If you live in or near a city with a university then there is likely a laptop shop near campus.
