As I told you earlier my husband & I have been ill with flu like symptoms. Of course I called my cancer care team & let them know what was going on, including the fact that we had serial tested at home for covid.
Bam! I ended up in the rack, after sitting for one hour in an exam room waiting to be wheeled down to X Ray for covid patients. My oxygen sats were low, Someone came in, wheeled me out next to the potted plants near the rack waiting area. There I sat for another 1/2 hour. The lone guy running the cancer center desk kept peering out & finally came rushing out “ this is unacceptable “ he went back in, came out & said we were going to chemo. He wheeled me up himself & was so kind.
They put me in a small private room, isolation & respiratory precautions signs on the door, full on masks, gowns, gloves, face shields. My immunotherapy drug took forever to get to the floor & I reminded them I had the Ride. coming & still hadn’t had my chest X-ray.
Please understand that you can’t just ask the ride to come later, you have to cancel & rebook..I could have been sitting in the main lobby for hours. Still weak from the flu I wasn’t looking forward to that. Somehow that was viewed as being entitled, something that made me a joke in the hall later 😢 The RN asked why I wasn’t eating…I explained I didn’t want to remove my N95 with people coming in & out. I didn’t want to create risk for others.
Long story short… I had a PCR covid test, the one where it feels like they are going into your brain. I had caretakers I didn’t know, felt basically unheard. I was also physically weak, tired & felt like I was somehow dirty, unclean. I cried, was a bit snappish but apologized immediately…only to hear myself being made fun of a short time later 😢 Going to the bathroom once required & escort who stood outside till I finished
Once I was done, they said they needed to kick me out a side door…for some reason this made me howl with laughter 😂😂😂😂 breaking the ice with the nurse who had been laughing about me. I explained briefly what had been going on & he got it.
It was a horrible day…I get why they did what they did…but they didn’t get how tired & still sick I was or how afraid…they told me to call if anything came up, I was honest & said “ this is the last place I would ever call” lol!
Oh & my covid PCR test came back negative!
