As I told you earlier my husband & I have been ill with flu like symptoms. Of course I called my cancer care team & let them know what was going on, including the fact that we had serial tested at home for covid.

Bam! I ended up in the rack, after sitting for one hour in an exam room waiting to be wheeled down to X Ray for covid patients. My oxygen sats were low, Someone came in, wheeled me out next to the potted plants near the rack waiting area. There I sat for another 1/2 hour. The lone guy running the cancer center desk kept peering out & finally came rushing out “ this is unacceptable “ he went back in, came out & said we were going to chemo. He wheeled me up himself & was so kind.

They put me in a small private room, isolation & respiratory precautions signs on the door, full on masks, gowns, gloves, face shields. My immunotherapy drug took forever to get to the floor & I reminded them I had the Ride. coming & still hadn’t had my chest X-ray.

Please understand that you can’t just ask the ride to come later, you have to cancel & rebook..I could have been sitting in the main lobby for hours. Still weak from the flu I wasn’t looking forward to that. Somehow that was viewed as being entitled, something that made me a joke in the hall later 😢 The RN asked why I wasn’t eating…I explained I didn’t want to remove my N95 with people coming in & out. I didn’t want to create risk for others.

Long story short… I had a PCR covid test, the one where it feels like they are going into your brain. I had caretakers I didn’t know, felt basically unheard. I was also physically weak, tired & felt like I was somehow dirty, unclean. I cried, was a bit snappish but apologized immediately…only to hear myself being made fun of a short time later 😢 Going to the bathroom once required & escort who stood outside till I finished

Once I was done, they said they needed to kick me out a side door…for some reason this made me howl with laughter 😂😂😂😂 breaking the ice with the nurse who had been laughing about me. I explained briefly what had been going on & he got it.

It was a horrible day…I get why they did what they did…but they didn’t get how tired & still sick I was or how afraid…they told me to call if anything came up, I was honest & said “ this is the last place I would ever call” lol!

Oh & my covid PCR test came back negative!

Sorry you had such a poor experience. The hurry up and wait thing has happened to us all at some time or other and a 'bit snappish' is a far better response than so many I've heard and seen. .

I'm sorry but I don't get why you ended up at the hospital (maybe I need more coffee) and what the heck is the "rack"?

Sorry to hear you had a bad day. At least you got to leave. Better than hearing "Oh, shit...", and getting your own private room.

I was there for cancer treatment, they did labs via my port, vitals & gave me an immunotherapy infusion of Opdivo.

The rack is where they send covid positive , or suspected positive cancer patients.

My issue was with how I felt I was treated at a center known world wide as one of excellence. Sick for months, hit with the flu, confronted with care givers I didn’t know at all. My perception matters & honestly it all felt pretty frightening & lousy. I did not refuse their directions or requests & left feeling like I was just another dirty disease carrier 😢

I am sorry I am cranky & not grateful enough, I’ve been feeling lousy for months & a week of the flu hasn’t helped. I did get a sense of how patients who don’t work in the medical field might have felt & it was sobering & enlightening, I learned a lot from it & gained a new perspective. Kudos to the good man who wheeled me up to chemo, now I get to start trying to regain the progress I made in physical therapy.

No apologies required. Those medical "professionals" should be ashamed of themselves for making fun of you like that and making you feel bad.... at least where you could overhear it!

;)

Having said that I'm sure they've been through literal hell over the last two years so it's at least partially understandable.

I'm just glad you didn't have Covid! :)

It is my understanding that many of the nurses working on the rack are highly paid travel nurses & as such probably don’t understand the Ride, a transportation service offered to sick or disabled people. My comment about “ not wanting to spend another minute there” came from my fear that I would have to cancel & rebook the Ride which could have meant a 4-5 hour wait in the main lobby. I always book my rides with extra wait time calculated into things in case I need to wait, this time ran through that extra time & I made it at the last minute.

I get going through hell, I get it after 7 years of fighting cancer & being a hospital worker myself. But damn it, I get tired of having to deny, stuff & joke away my feelings. I am sick, tired, home bound & I was scared…and those things matter. Covid protocol could have been followed with a kinder touch.

Is there a reason they can't arrange for you to work from home? I would hate being in your situation knowing I'm vulnerable and basically forced to be exposed to so many people. Seems they should make some accommodations. They're lucky you're even still working since I can't see why anything stops you from going on long term sick leave.

I haven't been to a hospital in years, maybe longer - either to visit or as a patient (and yes, I'm sooo grateful). But honestly, that's about what I would have expected - except for being ridiculed. There is absolutely NO excuse for that. I mean if someone's behavior is truly beyond the pale and you're not getting through to them otherwise, I suppose I can see doing that but only to help relieve tension among the staff, and even then, I would NOT be laughing with them.

I think people in medical profession feel somehow . . . let's call it "privileged." And I can understand that up to a point, but NO ONE is above the basic rules of decorum. And that sounds like a rather sterile admonition, it's anything but.

In other news I lost 2 more pounds, the weight gain from my thyroid dying is slowly slipping away. Ordered groceries, just all heart healthy things that I actually like, avocados, tomatoe, sweet potatoes, peppers etc. I have lost about 15 pounds so far & hope to get back into normal BMI range fairly soon.

Things are going okay, next up PT will be getting me a cane & getting it fitted & teaching me how to use it effectively. I won’t always need it but it will make navigating uneven, rougher outside surfaces safer & easier.

Infusion next Friday & CT scans probably on the 29th….Scan anxiety is a real thing …thanks cancer

The main thing about using a cane that you need to know is always swing for the head. Unless they give you one of those with a hidden sword. In that case, just keep it well lubed and then pull and thrust. Pull and thrust. :)

edit: we getting crunked up in he-ya

yeah but I would need to wear a 3 musketeers suit, that could get kinda warm in Boston come summertime 😂

Cane tease.

I knew that before I even looked it up. If I really, really want something like that, I have *ahem* other ways. You'd be surprised how many out of state businesses give less than a shit about NJ "laws."

There's also the fact I probably can't trust myself. Now which button is for the flassssssssssss . . . .

It’s a brand of chicken restaurants out where I live 😂

I’ve had various names in the past, most I have forgotten

After getting over the flu, I started feeling sick again a couple weeks later. Now awaiting delivery of antibiotics for pneumonia & lucky me I put my back out from coughing. My CT scan was put off & this Friday’s infusion pushed back two weeks.

I feel massively tired & weak. I even ordered those Scrubber pads that you wet with water to clean myself & a monitor to check my blood oxygen….the scrubber pads actually worked pretty well & it felt good to put on fresh clothing.

I have missed you people ❤ oh & tested negative for COVID again

Uncontrollable coughing has GOT to be one of the most annoying and sometimes frightening things. My I recommend my own signature brand of cough syrup fortified with hydrocodone - Tussionex.

Don't worry about it being an opiate. It's timed release and lasts 10-12 hours so the worst that happens is it puts you to sleep. I'm pretty sure it also has an expectorant to "loosen up" the mucus.

This is coming from a former and chronic bronchitis sufferer so I feel your pain.
