🙁 no, people are stupid

Do you change your oil? Do you even know how? Do you do your own plumbing? Carpentry? Electrical work?

For a lot of people it's a waste of time fidgeting with a computer for a few hours getting it to work. They're no more stupid than you are with respect to that which you pay someone else to do.

I don't understand why this is so hard of a concept for most of the people on this board to comprehend.

And I am sure over on car repair boards the joke about the nerd that paid $500 to get his head gasket replaced.

I was in BB last night with my room mate because he needed a surge protector and we walked by the Geek Squad desk and I noticed something: They are all dressed like mormon missionaries, black pants, white shirt, cheap thin black tie. Oh and for the record they contract out the more difficult problems that they encounter. (Read non malware related problems)

I do all of those things, but then I am a weird engineer type who wants to learn at least a lttile about everything I see someone else doing.

I feel sad everytime I hear about people taking their stuff to the GS. But some of these people should get charged an ID10T tax for about every word that comes out of their mouth. GS is a good way to do that.

I do as much as I can, yes. Its not necessarily that people are stupid and can't do it themselves, its sometimes that there are cheaper places. Heck, right next to my local BestBuy store theres a computer repair shop who will fix anything for a helluva a lot less. How hard is it to install anti-virus software anyway with step-by-step instructions?? People are illiterate... read the fvcking manuals that come with stuff and stop being so lazy. For most things, it would be a waste of time letting your computer sit and waiting for the GeekSquad man to come, then waiting even more when he gets there. You could do it yourself faster, save money, and learn something new.

I agree with the part that they are stupid for paying those prices, however look at it this way: I know plenty of lawyers that bill at $500+ and hour and work 10-12 hours a day. Why on God's green earth should they come home after working 12 hours and teach themselves to clean spyware? It isn't fun, they aren't looking for a career in IT, so why should they bother, when they can have someone do it for them?

When people get their cars fixed, or get work done around their house, do they go to some schmo down the street without a certification or insurance?

Or do they go to a name they know, and are willing to shell out some extra money for the peace of mind?

Are those types of jobs and businesses associated with them bound to fail?

Same basic concept of "uneducated" people overpaying somebody who is educated in that specific field.

mmmm not quite. If you do somethine wrong to your PC you may fry a $70 motherboard. If you build a brick wall wrong, well....

If you're careful and follow instructions, it's pretty easy to do the basic tasks of all the occupations listed.

If you want to get into something analgous to a professional putting up a brick wall, it'd be like doing work on a company's critical servers. Let's be fair and compare apples to apples.

Geek Squad and the likes are here to stay as long as there are folks who are 100% clueless as to what is going on with their PC's.

Man, you guys are dumb. Of course they'll succeed. You think everybody knows everything about computers? Heck, visit General Hardware or Technical Support here, and you'll see tons of people who have problems... and most of these people have more knowledge than the average housewife or senior.

They're not gonna fail. The majority of the population doesn't know how to fix computers like the geeks and nerds on this forum, just as a majority of the population doesn't know how to fix their car when some maintenance light turns on. Did all the autobody repair shops fail because they charge you an arm and leg to fix simple problems? No.

i don't see why they will not be successful

look at all the auto shops that just change oil/do brakes/mufflers, things that our grandfathers did themselves

there are a crap load of computer illiterate people and there always will be
