Geek friend has become ungeekified

When we were young, this friend of mine was such a geek. He knew all sorts of things about computers, he built his own, he even taught me C. Then we went off to college, me to Rutgers and him to Stanford. Well, we graduated and now he is back in the area. Last week I went to his place and was hanging out when he showed me his new computer. An HP box. He didnt build it himself, it's not even a Dell. He has lost the way. It's not just that, he's so out of technology in general. He's never heard of Slashdot or BitTorrent, cant program very well anymore, and some other things also.

I just find it amazing how out of touch with the things he used to love he has become. Has anyone else ever observed anything like this before?

Or you just got lazy all together... technology would become so much to follow, and one day... you just decide to give up.... and find a real woman ;)

Happened to me. I used to know the fill rate of all the graphics card on the market and all sorts of useless PC knowledge, now my PC is running on a hand me down Geforce 3 card.

My friend has experienced a similar transformation, but not as extreme (yet). He used to be the into computers (Jr. High, about 5 years ago), his dad is a computer techie and it rubbed off on him so he was ahead of the game. But then he went through some different stages I suppose you could say: wanted to be a musician, an engineer, a lawyer, a politician, and the computer stuff came off during that period (basically he lost interest in it). Although he still is better than average at computers, he's still way off of g33k status (although most people I know still think he has geek computer skills, just because they don't know any better). I'll report back in another 4 years and see how much more has rubbed off.

Well, he parties, drinks a lot, and reads. He has a degree in Classics from Stanford and he's all into that kind of literature now. Coincidentally, he went to Stanford as a CS major, then switched to Classics when he felt that CS would interfere with his time for drinking and partying.

He's actually going to Rutgers now getting a degree in Physics because as he says "Classics wont get me anywhere."

That's what I said 3.5 years ago. I mean, if he really was into it then fine, but he did it just to be able to slack off more. The guy is really smart too, was valedictorian of my HS class.

It's not a matter of "growing up" really... I mean, I dont have as much time for geekly pursuits as I used to, but I still follow it some.

Anyway, I retract that statement based on new information.... he got a useless degree and spends his time drinking, that's not grown up. Based on the first post I thought he had graduated from school and gotten a job and moved onto bigger and better things than assembling PCs to play video games and such.

Buying a HP PC is beyond ungeekified, it is a slip into buying really bad stuff in any category of product. Dell is a minimum for computers. Otherwise good for him.
