I recently got a copy of gears of war and tried playing it. it was horrible. the game was extremely choppy even though i turned down the quality and resolution. everything was set to default medium and resolution at 1280*1024 w/vsync off then on.

here are my pc specs:

amd 4200+ @ 2.6ghz
1gb ddr ram
seagate 250gb pata
8800gts 320mb w/latest official wqhl driver (163.75 or something like that)

the only thing im low on is ram, but ive been running bioshock fine.

i want to play this game badly, but the choppiness is killing me. if i cant fix it ill just return it and get a different game like cod4.

mine runs fine on a machine with 2 gigs of ram and a 8800gts 640, and great on a Q6600 with a 8800gt.

runs nice on my GF's box, Sempron 3200+ 2 gigs memory + 1950pro. Must be the memory because your system smokes hers everywhere else.

* Thread with all sorts of fixes/tweaks: one that might be relevant to you is that you may need to install the AMD dual core hotfix
* I think a 1.1 patch was released, you can try that
* If all else fails, get the 360 version, it runs very smoothly :)

I've heard it was actually ported really well.

visit the GoW forums, read the hundreds of threads discussing crashes + stuttering, and you'll think otherwise.

Are you sure that wasn't prerelease expectations since Epic was a PC game developer? The only positive news I heard after it came out was that when the game was made it was made with much higher resolution textures for the PC so the PC version looks significantly better than the console version. The PC version also had extra levels.

If you're running it under Windows XP that amount of ram should be fine. I don't know how high of settings you'll be able to get with the 6800GT though.

Although I just bought it and I"m using an HD2600 so I can't imagine that is much better if at all.

yeah, maybe I'll finally put down the money for an x1950 or something. I dont want to do an entire overhaul for a couple more years.

I'm going through the game for a second time, at 1280x1024 everything max, 4x anistropic filtering, with the rig in my sig, and it runs absolutely perfectly. Not even any bugs the first time through, unlike Hellgate London!

You should be ok as long as you don't want to run the game in uberfreakinhyperresolution mode. :)

As for stuttering - I couldn't make it through the game thanks to the annoying random stuttering... :( Maybe I'll try again with the latest patch to see if they managed to fix it...

Does anyone know if running in DX10 gains any graphical enhancements besides a 5fps drop for me?

OP - it sounds like your rig, get more ram and try it again, ram is like $10 a gig for the cheap stuff now, so pile it on :)

=( Unfortunately DDR isnt as cheap as DDR2. For me to get another stick, itll be at least 50-60 bucks. Ive already spent $300 upgrading to X2 and 8800GTS so Im pretty broke right now.

I guess ill just wait to see if the patch works or return the game. I really dont want to dump more money into an almost 2 gen old system.

I don't know what the hype is all about with this game.
I tried to play it yesterday and quit after the tutorial. The art design seems like leftovers from Unreal, Unreal 2 and the Tournaments.
The dudes look like they are inflated, the glow and bloom is overused and the cover system is feeling unhandy.
R6:Vegas had a way better and more fun cover system. The jumping animations seem a bit cartoony and don't mix together as fluidly as e.g. in Crysis.
Can't believe this game has the following it has...

It doesn't have much of a following on the PC. If you were 12 and only had a Xbox, you would like it more.

I had major vsync problems, somehow fixed that by alt-tabing out to desktop, then forcing vsync through nvid control panel, then alt-tabbing back in. Strange, but worked.

As to the game, I'm not blown away. After GS 9.6 gushfest I was expecting more than just pretty graphics, but that's about all it is. For a cover n' shoot title, R6:V kills this game.

I'm having fun with it. It's a shame you have to pay for Live to play online as I'm not giving MS my money to play online, but I do have afree 30 day trial for Gold, but nah I wont give them the satisfaction.

You don't have to pay to play with the PC version. A silver PC account lets you play GoW online free. Of course compared to any other PC online gaming experience, Games for Window Live sucks ass. It doesn't even offer dedicated servers.
