Gears of War 2 "Major Update"

Pretty sure this isn't a repost, was reading today and this came up.

EPIC forums

First of all I hope all of you had a safe and happy holiday season.

As I mentioned before the break we?ve been working on a major title update for Gears of War 2. This update will address bugs and exploits as well as add some new achievements related to downloadable content. We don?t have an exact date for it but all indicators are it will go live within January. If that changes we?ll let you know.

We?re fixing a whole bunch of online exploits. For example we?ve fixed the ability to wield an invisible shield, melee through some walls, gain infinite Lancer ammo and equip a shield and a two-handed weapon simultaneously plus many more.

We?re also making several small changes to improve the overall online gameplay experience. A few of the ones that might interest you are; increased penalties for quitting matches early, adding additional spawn protection against planted grenades and chainsaw attacks, and adding the ability to see the Submission flag carrier destination by using Tac/Com.

We know you folks love achievements so on the achievement side we?re adding achievement progress numbers to the War Journal, increasing the frequency of in-game Achievement progression notifications and adding some new Achievements for DLC.

This is just a very small list of some of the things that will be in the next title update but one more item which has been talked about a lot in our forums deserves a special call out...

About that shotgun...

We fixed the client side hit detection on the shotgun so that in a high-latency (i.e. ?laggy?) match, the shotgun will be more reliable. We?ve also fixed another bug whereby shotgun and boomshot rounds could strike the ground when firing from the hip.

So there?s a brief status report on the next title update. At some point I expect we?ll post a more detailed list but I assure you we?re working hard to get this out the door and once it?s done we?ll start working on the next update. We?ll try to do a better job keeping you informed of our progress on future updates and we?ll try to be a little more active in the forums once this update is released.

It was posted in the official Gears of War 2 thread but is fine here in case anybody missed it.

Wonder if they'll change anything in Horde.. also awesome move giving penalties for those who quit early and not for those who get disconnected. getting tired of playing with people who just quit randomly on like wave 10...

Where does it say that? It's not necessarily clear that you won't be penalized for disconnecting (unless I'm missing something that's further into that massive thread). If that's true, then you could probably just sign out of XBL or unplug your ethernet/wifi if you wanted to quit a match without penalty.

Right, but it doesn't specify if disconnecting counts or not. Just because he only used the word "quit" doesn't necessarily mean anything.

well quit is a voluntary thing. disconnect is in-voluntary. i took from it, there trying to stop people from just leaving a match, because there doing bad. maybe in like deathmatch it doesnt matter ,but i know in horde its a pain. IF they changed horde so people could join mid-game... well then it would be soo much more awesome.

I don't think quitting is necessarily a voluntary thing, although that's how it is usually applied. You could be right, but for now it's just an assumption.

And again, if they don't penalized for disconnects, that still gives people a way to game the system, as lame as it is to be penalized for something beyond your control. That's how Halo 3 works, though.

Yep. Because once people figure out that they get penalized by quitting a game through the menu or the 360 Guide, they'll start quitting by simply unplugging the ethernet/wi-fi adaptor from their console.

yeah, make it a penalty if they use quit in the game. but i mean, if they wanted to. They could tell if someone did this. dropping in a game doesnt kick you off xbox live. usually it just kicks you out of a game, which means your still communicating with Xbox live. if you cut your connection, you cut out xbox live. have it pick up on that maybe? might be far fetched. but people would maybe stop?

I'm kinda with you there, which dissappoints me greatly.

Games need to be right on release day. The time to get it right was 11/7/2008, not ?/?/2009.

Exactly my feelings. I was SO stoked pre-release and I was SO let down just after...

I still have a sealed copy of the game. I got it along with Fable 2 mid-December. Never got the urge to play. Don't think this update will help much.

This game was amazing for a while but now I have no desire to pick it up because of how people manipulate these errors in multiplayer..

Beat me to it.

There's no way to fix this (unless they let people leave/enter matches in progress, which I'm dumbfounded by the lack thereof). You either have to penalize both, or neither.

It isn't possible to "quit" per se in Gears 2, the only option is to go to the dashboard or accept an invite, or cycle the console's power, and all of those things should show up as disconnects to the host.

From what I've seen all the 4 or 5 bar ranked players on Xbox Live are people who quit before the last round when they do bad so their stats won't count.

This is a change they made from Gears 1 that is terrible. In Gears 1 they had Player matches. There were no rankings but the games were displayed in a browser (like the ranked games) so that anyone can join. So if you had 6 friends you could still get 2 other people and have a full room. Why they took this out of Gears 2 is beyond me...
