Bought Gears 1 used for $15 a few months ago. Finished it the other week. It was OK. Cheezy and "cheap" boss battles were tiresome.

Rented Gears 2 about 6 months ago, never got to finish it. Finished it this weekend. I have to say IMO it was way, way better than the first.

Besides the slightly better graphics, the story was better, combat was better, it was much longer or seemed like it, no cheezy, cheap boss battles to speak of. There were the large beasties here and there but they didn't feel tacked on and pointless like in Gears 1.

Here's hoping there will be a Gears 3. Any news on that front?

Now you gotta go online and get pwned by the lag.

Great game, and I still love the multiplayer but wish they had dedicated servers :(

I tried to get into GoW 2, because I love the formula, but the matchmaking and lag were just absolutely unbearable. Never have I had to wait so long to get into a match, only to have to skip and hop around at 5FPS.

GoW 3 is slated for next-gen consoles, per Epic Games... so you're at least 2 - 3 years out.

Thanks for this review, because I share your feelings about GoW1 so I haven't bothered with the sequel yet.

Epic already back peddled on that comment. Epic is all about money, so you can bet gears3 will be out asap.

I also highly doubt gears2 mp will ever be playable to me(glitch free/acceptable lag). It's been out almost 11 months and is in as bad or worse shape than launch. People keep buying dlc so why bother fixing it.

The MP is incredibly fun but I'd say about 15-20% of the time there seems to be a problem with lag due to a crappy host.

GoW2 gave me some of the funnest co-op times with the roommates. GoW1 never seemed nearly as fun...

I'm also to cheap to pony up for XBL Gold so I "play with myself ;-)" or is that by myself? or a little co-op. So my opinion is based entirely on the solo campaign.

i actually enjoyed gears1 campaign more than part 2.

part 2 had too many on rails parts, and the end you could beat with your eyes closed.

actually, i enjoyed pretty much all aspects of gears1 more than gears2, other than horde mode.

i liked the SP of gears2 over gears1 ... but i still really liked gears1. gears2 just felt bigger and badder. i loved the story and the dialog.

This.

Gears 1 was awesome. Gears 2 was more of the same, but with more annoying crap tacked on. I played Gears 1 a ton, for the 360 and for the PC. I only rented Gears 2 for a few days. Horde mode was the only real redeeming quality of Gears 2.

Some of the dialog in Gears 1 is classic as well. You can just tell in Gears 2 that they were trying too hard to be "cool".

I liked Gears 1 alot, but played through it SP. I played through most of Gears 2 with a buddy, so it was more fun, being co-op. Never played the MP though.

Don't worry about being behind, I finally finished GTAIV last weekend. I took a 14 month break :)

As far as being behind...I'm still trying to finish Mass Effect 1. I need to stop renting new releases I don't want to purchase and buying new games that I do want to purchase so I can get back to Mass Effect.

I played them in reverse, started with Gears 2 then I just picked up the original Gears Platinum Edition for $20 with the bonus disc. They really improved things in 2 but I think they also removed some of the characters like the Berserker who could only be killed with the Hammer of Dawn.

In 2 there really wasn't anything that could not be taken out with grenades or regular weapons.

The original Gears also is more buggy and there have been moments where I got stuck at a door that only Kim could open, Kim, Dom and Cole would just stand there peaking around the corners and never do anything.

There will be a 3 for sure, also a Movie is in the works so expect more from the Franchise.

Probably more to do with the fact that the next-gen of consoles got pushed out by a couple of years due to market conditions. If the Xbox 3/720 was coming out in 2010 or even 2011 like in a typical console cycle, I can see Epic holding off on GoW3. However, it is looking like it will be 2012 or later for the next round of consoles.

A few of the things in Gears 1 solo campaign that I didn't like were as mentioned the cheezy boss battles. Sure the "bosses" if you can call them that in Gears 2 were easier to beat but they didn't seem to be added on just for the hell of it. They kind of fit into the flow of the game better.

The other thing about Gears 1 was the "friendly AI". That is Dom. In Gears 1 he was a fucking idiot to put it mildly. Constantly and I mean constantly dying in nearly every battle within the first minute. He was much less stupid in Gears 2, although, still not totally safe from the Darwin awards.

And I played it on the easy level, cause I suck at shooters and video games in general even though I LOVE playing them when I have the time.

I'm hoping there will be a Gears 3 for the 360. If not, any recommendations for something similar?

To this day, GOW2 horde is some of the most fun that can be had in a game. I'll play with complete strangers and everybody is always having fun. The us vs. them factor is just oh so satisfying.

I love the GoW series and I can't wait to see what they have in store for us in the next installment. I think Gears 2 was definitely a big step forward. That said, I think there are parts where they tried too hard. I love the rift worm stage but it's a bit over-the-top. The driving sequences were okay on the first go, but the second time around they were a bit agonizing... they broke up the action a little too much. Same goes for the portions that are like "You're riding a ______ fending off enemies on other _____"

My biggest gripe is that they changed the overall feeling about the game. The first one was sort of "Guess what? You're fucked. It's out of the frying pan and into the fryer for you, because all you've got are your balls and your bullets." When the second one rolled around it became more of a "O hai, we're here to fuck you up." feeling. The part with the Sires gave the feeling of old, but after that short, unexplained sequence you're right back at it.
