YMMV, but I picked up an 8 pack of GE Reveal lightbulbs (100w) for $2.12 last night at my local Lowe's. They had about 2 dozen packs in stock. The 40w bulbs were at this price as well. Just a 4-pack of these bulbs usually goes for about $4, so you're looking at about 80% savings.

edit: Tried to find it on their website, but they've only got the 60w pack online, and it's $5.

you enviro-criminal, you... i think the light from those bulbs is weird... i still have some sitting in the closet...

Buy them while you can, the enviro-nazis want to ban incandescent bulbs. Instead, they would rather pollute the environment with mercury from broken compact-flourescent bulbs. LED lighting can't get here soon enough.

😀

I love the color of light they give off. It's very nice for taking photos indoors. Also, I now use 1 100w bulb in a couple fixtures that used to have 2 pairs of 60w bulbs. I'm saving energy. Booyah!

Agreed, Larry. I personally can't stand the buzzing sound that CFLs give off either. I'll buy color-balanced LED lights when they are available at a reasonable price.

Hmm, I used to use the GE Reveal lights in my apartment and I really did like them. But the house I bought came with all CFL's in the fixtures so I had no reason to replace them. Not only that, but you can get a 4-pack of 100 watt equivalents at Home Depot that only draw 23 watts each for $2.87 right now. The key is to get the soft white ones, not the ugly ass ones that let off the bright light blue color.

Soft white is the most commonly used incandescent bulb, so it generally stands to reason that you would use soft white CFLs as replacements. That's not always the case, though. I've replaced most of the bulbs in my house with CFLs, but when it came time to replace the ones in my living room soft white CFLs looked like total $#!+. The "lamp shades" in my living room are made of thick old white glass, and they did something nasty to the light output from soft white CFL bulbs. I decided to try daylight CFL bulbs (daylight are the bluish ones), and this produced very acceptable light output.

Greetings, VirtualLarry! If people would properly dispose of dead CFL bulbs instead of simply throwing them in the trash, then whatever negative environmental impact the mercury poses would obviously be minimized or negated. Humans are often lazy, though (including me!).
