It's kinda funny though. :D

Not, was this a 3 lane road, or 2? (I.E. did you have to cross a middle lane before making it to the right?)
2 lanes. No middle lane involved, nor would I have tried if there was one.

So it was 1 lane to turn left and one to turn right or straight. You switched into the right/straight lane near the light. A hole cop pulls you over.

If so, then I was wrong before. You did nothing wrong.

A hole cop probably assumed you made that turn from the left turn only lane.

Red light. No impeded trafic.

I hope all the traffic nazis get killed by drunk drivers speeding through a red light turning right in the left turn only lane.

Also. If you really want to see whether or not what you did was illegal, instead of asking Non-NY LEO on here, check the NYS Vehicle and Traffic Law book. See these links:

http://www.senate.state.ny.us/senatehomepage.nsf/home?openform
That would be great if I lived in NY. :D I live in NC, but thanks anway, I'm off to google to figure out what my options are and what kind of penalties I'm looking at.

Bwahahahahaha. I'm sorry. I really need to change my contacts. But the general idea is not lost on what to do. I confused you with another cow avatar.

Also remember every state has different traffic laws. What is legal in one state might be against the law in another.

So what you did might be illegal in your state, but not in others. However I don't see why what you did would be a illegal.

Soooo pissed.

So I'm in the left turn lane and I realise that I need to turn right. Keep in mind this is at a red light, so I signal and someone lets me in and I turn right. 20 yards down the road I look in my rear-view to see a white unmarked car with it's lights on. "It's all good, what did I do, he's probably trying to get past me" is what I think as I move to the side of the road, as he follows I realise "no f-ing dice" so I turn into the first parking lot.

I kill my car, turn down the radio, roll down my window and put my hands on the dash waiting for the officer. "I pulled you over because you took a right turn from a left lane". WTF?!? That doesn't even make any sense. "You see officer, I'm in a big rush and I'm not familar with the city and I had to get over". Let me see your license and registration is all he says. But... I'm left with words in my mouth as he walks away to his car. He comes back 10 minutes later with a ticket for $135. :|

At this point I realise that I can't do jack and accept it and drive off.

There are a few points of interest:
I can't make out what the actual charge is on the ticket, I know what he told me "taking a right turn from a left turn only lane" but I can't imagine that anybody else will be able to make the offense out. I plan on contesting this charge in court, hoping that he won't show up or that I'll be able to explain my side to a judge, but if nobody can tell what the charge is and the cop doesn't show up do I get out of it?
Also, I know that this is a hit or miss thing, but he did say that I was pulled in the PM when I was pulled in the AM. If I was somehow able to prove that I wasn't in my car this evening at that time would I be able to get out of it?

Now I'm all for accepting responsiblity for my actions and if I had done something that I actually thought was illegal I would have no problem manning up and eating the fine. I'm really pissed that the cop didn't even listen to what I had to say. Of course I saw a cop every mile and there were many people on the side of the road having been pulled. I guess it's time to start the new year off with some new money for the city.

Even if I don't get out of it what are my chances of having the charge reduced and if not what kind of points am I looking at for my insurance, if any?

Eat your own words and own up. What you THINK is illigal is irrelevant as you clearly violated the traffic rules.
I get the impression that it's quota day and the cop saw an easy "ticket". The cop didn't listen to a word I said.

What is illegal about changing lanes and turning?

There are no "quotas".
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH!!

What's so hard to understand about "left turn only"?
"Left-turn only" means: don't go straight or turn right. I didn't think it mean't that you couldn't change out of the lane.

If it does then I am clearly in the wrong, but I don't think it does.

Again, what you "think" is irrelevant. Is the word "only" that hard to comprehend?

I see reading comprehension is not your friend. He did NOT turn right from a left turn only lane. He was in the left turn only lane. He used his signal to change lanes to the right lane. He then used his signal to turn right. He did NOT swerve from the left hand lane into the side street.

You should take a refresher course. Since when does "only" means "sometimes"? I don't care if he used a signal, blew horn, and waived at the same time. He performed an illegal maneuver and was nailed for that.

Wow you must not have been driving for long, eh?

Just because you're in a lane that says left turn only does NOT mean that you can not change your lane. Go take a refresher course.

The OP has stated that it was a two lane road (not counting the left turn lane) and he moved from the left turn lane and made a right turn, all within 20 yards, then it sounds to me like he did cut directly from the left turn lane and turned right.

Pay the fine.

I think he said there were only 2 lanes, including the left only lane.

No. There were 2 lanes, excluding the left turn only lane. So 3 lanes total.

Personally, I think that this is how it happened. The pink line is tweakmm's car, looking suspiciously like he's drunk, the blue line is the sweet cop car.

I did forget to mention that I killed a pint of vodka in about 30 minutes about an hour earlier. Luckily he didn't smell the vodka on my breath!

I understand where you're coming from, and I don't know where you live - but people that do things similar to this really fsck up traffic here. People that aren't willing to do a u-turn, and instead block traffic or turn right from a left turn lane.. another one is where there are 30-40 cars lined up in the right turn lane to turn right and some douchebag acts like they're going to turn left (and pass everyone) then turn right anyway...

my bet is that the cop assumed you do crap like that all the time.

While it's annoying, you should pay up and next time turn around in a parking lot.
