I'd be interested to know what you think of these phones. Do $100 phones REALLY sound $80 better than $20 phones?
... errr... depending on how you do the math, I spent $55 for mine. If you're asking me would I spend $100+ on these same cans if I had to after hearing them? No. I've had something like this on my wish list for around 2 years and haven't bought them because the price was >$100.
My main motivation for these were sound isolation in an office environment and on airplanes. I was filling a void, not upgrading. I haven't used them much yet but so far I would say, yes, they really do sound better than my $20 over the ear open headphones and they do an excellent job isolating. The price I paid for them fit right in the range I'm willing to spend without weighing the pros and cons, $100+ doesn't.
Are you asking more generically, do any $100 phones sound $80 better than $20 phones? That all depends on what $80 means to you. It also depends on your source. I'm pretty sure I'm limited by the bitrate of my mp3s rather than the quality of my earphones and I'm in no hurry to re-rip my CDs.
hum, that was probably a more details answer than you were looking for... let me try again, in terms of what $80 means to me:
Generic question: Given a sufficiently good source, I would say yes.
Specific to the ER6i: No.
