GC68 beating a SK-7... Fixed now what about this vibration?

Hey guys...

I just got a Thermalright SK-7 heatsink for my new 2100+.

I was cooling it with a GC68 cooler and getting temps of 45 C at 100% load.

The SK-7 temps are up to 54 at load.

What the heck is going on here? No, the heatsink is not on backwards. I'm using the same fan that was on the GC68. Yes, I'm using ArticSilver (albeit AS2 and not AS3)

Temp just rose to 55 degrees... wth.

Any ideas?

<edit>
Ok... temps are good now...
However, I notice that there is a new vibration noise that was not there with the GC68. I'm sure it has something to do with the fan retension mechanism of the SK-7. Any help is again appreciated.

Arctic Silver on too thick? Too thin? Change in ambient temperature due to weather/climate control? Due to case airflow change? Dirt or dust between the fins on the SK-7?

Both temps taken within an hour of each other... computer was running at 45 when I took off the GC68. Now it is at 55 with a brand new SK-7

I will try to take it out and start over... I've installed my GC68 dozens of times and I used about the same amount of AS on the core as before...

Try this:
  • Unclip the end of the SK-7's clip that has the screwdriver receptacle
  • Slide the heatsink down the clip as far away from the screwdriver receptacle as possible
  • Clip it down again in this position
Because the heatsink can slide back and forth a bit on the clip, it can ride up on the solid-plastic end of the CPU socket if you don't make a point of pulling it as far to the other end as possible. Hope that helps :)

Ok...

reapplied the AS and checked the position of the HS.

Load temps are now around 39. I feel better about that...

Thank you all for your help...

Now...

I notice a "vibration" coming from the fan now. It is audible to me. Any way to overcome this? I'm sure it has something to do with the fan retension mechanism of the SK-7.

thanks all for your help so far.

If I hold on to the fan, the vibration stops... however, the fan seems to be secure.... I've even tried to move it slightly in either direction, but as soon as I take my hand off, the vibration starts again. I'm using the only clip that fits this fan. The other 80mm clip is too long.

The vibration is probably one or more of the fins. If your SK-7 came with a couple of black strips, put them between the fan and heatsink at the outermost fan ledges.

I tried the black strip and it was just a little two thick. Made it really hard to clip the fan back in... so... I improvised. I cut 6 thin strips of electrical tape and put 3 on each side. No more vibration. Worked like a charm.

Man... I've never had to tweak a Heat Sink so much.... but I love the results...
