I think I remember reading somewhere that the GC was more powerful than the PS2. Is this true?

Overall as a gaming system without a doubt. The PS2's CPU is stronger then the GC's, but the GC's GPU obliterates the PS2's rasterizer(it lacks a GPU) in every way save raw fill(which is the only thing the PS2's GraphicsSynthesizer really has going for it). All the T&L calcs, all of the shader type effects and a lot of the simple graphics features that the GC runs in hardware the PS2 has to handle in software on the CPU negating its edge in that area- and even when loading the CPU with graphics tasks it is no match for dedicated hardware several generations later.

I have a GC and a PS2 and I love them both. However, Soul Calibur 3 looks *amazing* on PS3.

GC i think has better games. only have 2 for PS2 that I thought were worth keeping (replay value). GT4, and Metal Slug (4&5).

As for my GC I have Metroid Prime, F-Zero GX, Mario Sunshine, etc, etc, etc -- all great games.

Wow...just wow.

Gamecube has some games that are at the top of any game list, but to say there are more great games on the cube is just silly.

In just the past week, I've played the following which are not available on the GC and I consider great games.

Burnout 4
Star Ocean: Till the End of Time
Kingdom Hearts
God of War
Soul Calibur 3

no doubt ps2 had and still has great games, but theres no question the GC is the better technical console.
Just take a look at re4 on both.

GOW is an amazing game, by far the best game i played in 05, but even at 480p widescreen, it just doesnt look as good as most 480p GC titles.

I'd give you GoW and DMC in terms of games but the rest? Admittedly I logged a good hundred plus hours into GT4 but after playing Forza GT4 seems akin to a NES game. Not saying the Cube has something on that level, but the PS2 is very much lacking in the top tier racing category as of now. MetalGear is cutesy if you are into watching cutscenes- it is flat out horrible in terms of gameplay; one of the poorer series in recent history.

You want to talk about the PS2 then use DragonQuest, DMC(excluding 2 of course which sucked), GoW, Shadow of Collosus and the like- they are much better examples of great games.

Gamecube has some games that are at the top of any game list, but to say there are more great games on the cube is just silly.

In terms of platform exclusive titles I would agree with the Cube having more then the PS2. The problem is that the Cube lacks so many of the killer multiplatform titles. Not saying the PS2 doesn't have its fair share- but the PS2 has an incredible amount of *good* games with a handful of great titles. The Cube has a few handfuls of *great* games and not too many good(of course both platforms have loads of crap).

Edit-

Yes, the Cube has fixed function T&L with some rudimentary pixel shader support. The PS2 is using pure software for its T&L calcs.

I also do have an playstation 2 and a Game cube and along with every major console since NES. I never really liked PS2 because it had an crummy controller. It is okay for most game but still the dual controller bit are ultra crap. Graphic wise PS2 is crap :! The only reason why i think PS2 is the best console for its gen is because of its games.

1. FFX
2. Metal Gear solid 2/3
3. Devil may cry 1 and 3 (2 was crap)
4. God of War
5. Dragon Quest VII
so on ...

I also happen to have an XBOX/XBOX 360 :! which isn't that too popular with people who play games (i hate the word "gamer" !! media has killed the word ) :!
XBOX/XBOX 360 fails in AWESOME Japanese style RPG and missing awesome exclusive titles.

but when it comes down to picking game like Burnout Revenge or Black or Sports or any multiplatform games I choose the xbox version because i just don't like Sony Dual shock controls . its accuary is crap :! playing FPS on two dual shock are impossible.

To me Graphic ain't Important in a game but Gameplay/Storyline is what drives people to love the game. I couldn't less care about XRD ram/Blu-ray/Bluetooth or 3 Gigabit Ethernet port on PS3. I just want Sony to fix the damn controller :!!!! When PS3 comes out and i will buy it on the day it comes out even if it means my friend camping out a camera store in tokyo at midnight just to get me one and for himself. then he mails it and i hope to god that it works and doesn't die in less than 1 year.

But i will end up finding some mod and use the xbox 360 USB controller on the ps3 if sony don't fix the damn dual shock controller :! if they get a decent controller i will love sony : )

Sony should learn from Nintendo :! its all about the games.
PSP had all the features and sexy looks but it is selling crap world wide compared to a Nintendo DS which features aren't that awesome. Nintendo now very well knows to only way to win is by having the most coolest games. a dude i work with doesn't play games but he bought a ds because he was just amazed with crazy nintendo games :! he loves Phoenix Wright and Trauma Center. I also got him hooked on Animal Crossing and advance wars. now he buying a ps2.

what i want to see from PS3
A Hell COOL COntroller :! the most important thing in my mind
A decent online mode would be nice just to play games with people i know because xbox live is loaded with 3 year old idiots that trash talk about anything :!
MOST OF ALL GAMES

Now i will get people saying "OHH PS2 controller doesn't look different to XBOX 360 controller" Or "They both play the same"

I would never play Black on PS2 just because PS2 controller ultra sucks with FPS because the Dual Shock Analog thingo aren't nowhere as decent as xbox/xbox 360 controller sticks ;!

I agree man. PS2 controller does suck. I might have to pick up a GC though since its cheap and sounds like theres some great games for it. I just recently upgraded my pc's
video card so theres no way I can afford 360. I like pc online play better anyway. Its free and has dedicated servers like for bf2 ,css , GW. Might even pick up an xbox 1 .

"but to say there are more great games on the cube is just silly."

I counted them up once about a year ago, and the Cube, Ps2, and xbox had roughly equivalent number of "great" games, based on reviews at gamerankings.com. Given that "great" is defined as 90% or better score. Since then PS2 maybe has pulled ahead ? I don't know.

Cube has a lot fewer good or mediocre games, and vastly fewer poor games, than PS2.

PS2 is by far the industry leader for bad games. ;)

The cube also has an 8 pipeline graphics chip, though only 4 pixel/texel pipelines. (so what's that leave, geometry?)

The PS2 is using pure software for its T&L calcs.

I don't think so, though your definition of pure software matters. VU0 and VU1 do the T&L calcs right, one of which is very cpu like and not really any more powerful at it than the PS2's emotion engine cpu, and the other is a fixed function T&L unit.

BTW, PS2 has the highest number of exclusive quality titles, followed by gamecube, with xbox in a very distant 3rd. (most good xbox titles come to the other consoles or PC)

over 50% of the game i love end up scoring low 70 to 80 :! the games i don't think are awesome end up scoring over 90% like HL 2 , FEAR ect :!

I have all three systems and each has good games. However I think the PS2 has more good games combined than the Xbox & GC. As far as graphics, I don't notice that much of a difference. Even though the PS2 is the oldest, I'm surprised by how well it still holds up. Shadow of the Colossus looks pretty good on that "old hardware.

The op wanted to know which was more powerful.

Given all the games that are available for both consoles, which is better on the ps2 in terms of graphics? Few to none.
I think overwhelmingly gc has the lead in terms of graphical prowess vs the ps2.

I love my ps2 and the games that were ps2 exclusives, but i never got a game for it if it was available on either the GC or XB.
As great as GOW was, can you imagine if it were on the xb or gc?

VU0 and VU1 are exactly what they are named- vector units. While they may be considerably better suited for T&L calcs then a general purpose CPU they are by no means whatsoever dedicated hardware. The end result of their capabilities has made it so that they have largely ended up that way, but the VUs are still utilized for a large number of functions outside of raw vertex crunching(sound and physics being the most common behind transform and lighting).

I believe it's programmable, just not very.

The Cube's transformation and lighting hardware is fixed function- due to the way the chip is designed some functions that would fall under vertex shaders on a typical PC GPU can be handled by the Cube's fragment shader hardware.

I have both and the cube pwns the ps2 as far as graphics. I bought the component video cable for the GC and running games in 480p on my HDTV looks great compared to ps2 graphics. Of course when it comes to games the PS2 is the clear winner but the GC has enough great exclusives to hold its own. Everyone should own both by now ;)

Order of power in current gen hardware:
Xbox>GC>PS2

That is set in stone if you base it on the hardware alone. And IMO the Xbox is the most powerful of them all (plus you can mod it, and put in a bigger hard drive, etc.)

I personally still prefer GT4 to Forza. All the racing games on the xbox felt empty and lacking compared to any of the GT series. Expecially PGR, I couldn't get into that game for squat. Now PGR3 on 360 is really nice. The physics are realistic but easy to adjust to. Hopefully if all the racers on 360 are this good then I'll definately get one eventually.

Graphically, the order for me is GC > xbox > PS2. Not that all games equate to that particular order, but for the most part it does. Seems there is always a catch 22 somewhere. For example some games may look better on PS2 than xbox, but the PS2 has tons of jaggies while the xbox doesn't but looks washed out or not as vibrant. GC seems to have a good balance of both.

Controller wise, the dual-shock is still the best for me. The S controller on the xbox is a close second. Definately tons better than that piece of crap that launched with it. The GC controllers are nice and pretty comfortable just a wee bit small.

All in all though, i've really enjoyed playing all 3 of my consoles

I've seen Gamecubes for $59-$69 used at Gamestop and EBgames. Not a bad deal to play some older great games. I still wanna pick up Rogue Squadron II for Gamecube as i've heard it's a great shooter.

Good deal. Even the new ones for $100 are a good deal (or at least they were)
