Negative,

In Caesar: Life of a Colossus, Adrian Goldsworthy discusses the attitude of gays in Rome during the time of Julius Caesar.

When Julius Caesar was climbing the military ranks he was accused of having a homosexual relationship with a high ranking commander.

Knowing that such a relationship would be detrimental to his military career, Julius Caesar denied any such relationship.

What shows are you watching? The only gay characters I can think of on shows I watch are the Dean on Community and Roger on American Dad and Roger is more of a bisexual. I don't watch a lot of tv though.

Even in Rome over 2,000 years ago being openly gay was not socially acceptable. Being gay was tolerated, not it was also frowned upon.

If a politician had a gay relationship, his career was ruined.

In the whole course of humanity, rarely have been gays been treated as equal members of society.

And for most of human history slavery has been legal.

Exactly. I'm very tired of hearing about homosexual rights, and the best way to stop people whining about discrimination is to stop discriminating.

There is no discrimination.

There is differentiation. Gay relationships are different from straight relationships and this difference has been recognized by society for 1000s of years.

fortunately, I suspect you're in the minority on your views and most people don't mind seeing diversity in media.

There's a difference between diversity and exploitation. As I said in another thread, minorities, the disabled, gays, etc. are used as marketing tools. That's not equality, at least in my eyes. That's a gimmick used to sell a product. But to each their own.

But honestly, most of the time it comes across as tokenism or it's just used to make a not-at-all-subtle dick joke, in which case, it's just diversifying the stupidity that makes up most TV. Still, I don't have a problem with it in and of itself anymore than I have a problem with any other minority group being represented on TV. If I feel like a TV show is "shoving it down my throat," that's more a function of bad writing than being upset with the over-representation of gays in media.

Agreed.

Is it any different than household product commercials featuring a mom and her kids, though?

The sooner they let gays and lesbians marry, the sooner the divorce shit storm will hit, and the sooner the whole legal institution of divorce, alimony, and child support as we know it will crumble. Bring it on.

To be fair, nehalem operates on the belief that relationships and sexual intercourse are the same thing.

Ohhh... I get it... See I was thinking of the former and he the latter. He needs to remind me of the sin inherent in homosexual behavior cause I all to frequently forget that fact.

That's what I wondered and at the same time made me curious what kind of shows s/he's into. 😉

BTW, does anyone know that in today's oral argument re Prop 8 Justice Scalia referred gays as.. gays, for the first time? He could never say "gays" or "gay persons." It was always "homosexuals." I was shocked to hear him saying "teh gays". (It sounded quite painful, I have to say)

Not that he was any less obnoxious but it was a change nonetheless.

today's oral argument re Prop 8

I thought the arguments were pretty interesting.
The defense of Prop 8 was asked if they thought gays/lesbians are a suspect class (regarding civil rights), to which he responded that in his view they aren't. Looking into it a bit I think they'd qualify as quasi-suspect.

Later the opposition was asked what restrictions a State might possibly put on marriage that would be constitutional other than age restrictions. The Justice asked - Incest? Polygamy? Anything at all?
The opposition's representative said that anti-polygamy laws are based on conduct, and gave no answer about incest or other restrictions.

Maybe someone can offer a legit reason that polygamy is any more conduct based then any other kind of marriage?

for the op, how bout all the boobs bouncing around on screen, throughout the history of media going back to caveman cave drawings? or for those opposed to guns and violence, how bout nearly every newly released movie themed with guns, violence and carnage?
so for me... a little rainbow colored flags and guys holding hands with other guys on the screen is fair catchup.
id bet every dollar bill gates has ever earned, that right now this very second if you change the channel on your tv, you find plenty of boobs bouncing around to entertain, and plenty of guns blowing off heads to satisfy every gun and violence thrill seeker.

or consider yellow school busses. most people never notice yellow school busses, until that is your kid starts riding on a yellow school bus. after that, its like those damn yellow school busses are frickin EVERYWHERE!!!

Only if you are taught from Texas History Books. !!SPARTA!!

The context is different though, a "man" would not take it in the A in Rome or Sparta...If a man did that then his social status is that of a whore more or less, all the historical texts make it clear that the men who "took it" were by no means looked up to at all. Its a double standard and today both men taking part in that would be seen as gay today but in those societies only the receiver had the stigma that goes with it. Prison rapists have the same mindset today btw.

I am not appealing to tradition. There is a fundamental difference between gay and straight relationships. Namely that straight relationships can procreate.

The thinking seems to be that under the law prohibition of gay marriage creates an unequal class which, if the law were logically extended under your premise, must apply to married couples who are infertile or chose not to have children.

Still not understanding how relationships and sexual intercourse are different things, eh?

KFTC, bro.

Marriage has no real significance, especially in the West. It is a joke and therefore does not have much meaning. If gays or whoever wants to get married, go ahead. It will only get worse.

The other thing is why do people care so much about getting a legal letter of marriage? Is it financial reasons only? Convenience factor? How does a letter or document make your better or "union" more solid?

Them 2 fellas with the daughter on Modern Family seem to have a pretty cool family
