Positively: Because now gay folk have the ability to be just as miserable as heterosexuals. I bet the LG's that get divorced and have to pay alimony are going to be kicking themselves in the ass. For the rest of them, I'm happy that they are happy.

beyond the benefits from a health, tax, and estate standpoint I personally can't see what the big deal is with getting married, only reason I did was because it was expected and we wanted to have a child, otherwise don't see a reason to care but that's just me.

As to the OP, it has no impact on me that I have realized yet other than seeing a bunch of posts about it which only make it so I have to scroll past most.

Tax benefits - is there something I'm not taking advantage of? AFAIK we're paying quite a bit more taxes as a married couple than when you combined our single returns.

There are multiple benefits to having a marriage contract recognized by the state. I'm sure google can help you find a few of the more common ones.

You could ask that question about a lot of things and get the same answer.

How has climate change personally affected you?
How has the murder rate in Detroit personally affected you?
How has Donald Trump running for President personally affected you?

For most of us, the answer to all of those would be "not at all". But the ramifications of those things will have an impact on our lives sooner or later. In the case of gay marriage, it needs to simmer for a few years before I'll know if it has any affect.

how fucking retarded your post is? fucking off the scale. i mean its so fucking off the scale it has to get its own scale.

I am really blown away by how fucking stupid your post was.

If you are against gay marriege? ok shrug silly but your choice.

but no..you had to take it higher. comparing it to climate change? really? then the murder rate in Detroit (you can ask the 160ish families who have had loved ones murdered if they would rather them be alive and gay..)

fuck. amazing post.

Ehh the few things that come up (being able to contribute to a spouse's IRA, estate taxes when I die, shorter time to count a house as a long term investment are all pretty slim compared to the additional taxes paid every year as a dual income household.

I love watching groups that I dislike suffer as a result of their own devices. E.g., when someone weaves in and out of traffic, cutting people off, causing you to jam on your brakes, when you see that person a few miles later, pulled over by the state police, you don't think, "that poor guy." You think, "serves you right, you bastard." So, I've been quite pleased watching all the bigots pulling their hair out. It's provided some gentle amusement. E.g., the case mentioned in the OP. I presume my neighbors 2 houses up the road (3/4 mile) can now get married, or maybe they could before; not sure what my own state's laws were before the decision.

You really need to learn how to read and comprehend the words you see. I said nothing against gay marriage. Not a single word even implied that I was taking a stand against it.
So armed with nothing more than ignorance and righteous indignation you chose to hurl insults at me because you think I might not agree with you.
Since you're functionally illiterate, let me explain it to you using small words so as not to overtax your limited comprehension. The point of my post was that many things won't affect most of us personally. I chose those things because they were serious, because they affect many people in the most profound ways, but overall have no effect on most of us here.
It's OK if you move your lips when you read that, anything to help you understand.

1. it hasn't, but we're acting by supposing that it will. E.g. environmental refugees, increasing hurricanes and stuff.
2. it creates costs because it's part of the vicious cycle that ended up with the city going bankrupt, and the taxpayer covered that. Also someone smuggled weapons illegally, fueling crime elsewhere because of the gangs not being pacified in Detroit. This causes a small contribution to general increase of criminality, which in turn makes drug slinging easier, which in turns makes the cocaine production in Colombia more lucrative and increases the attractiviness of crime there and thus decreases the power of the government, which makes the calabrian mafia import cocaine to Gioia Tauro more easily, which increases their income and thus their mafia activity, which ends up affecting everyone including me since it weakens the italian state and favours illegal immigration and cross-border crime which affect me personally in my wallet and sense of safety.
3. he hasn't, but people complain about it because they think about how they WILL be personally affected if he gets voted into presidency.

Gay marriage affects me in an almost unquantifiable way because of the taxation differences for married couple vs. cohabitating couples, but positively affects gays in a big way.
The murder rate in Detroit produces nothing positive for anyone so it's a lose-lose, we don't even have to ask the question.

So all-in-all I think the OP question is a legitimate one.

Someone saying they have to wait at least a few years to see if they are personally affected even if they don't believe they will makes sense though, for the sake of argument.

n/m - it's fine to say there are potential tax benefits, though it certainly seems to help lower income or single income families. With two working professionals who can self fund their own retirement accounts, the tax disadvantages pretty clearly outweigh benefits - though that's not a reason to get married or not. Stuff like estate tax when I die (yay!) or theoretical primary residence profit is going to be pretty fringe.

I think it's more accurate to say some may see tax benefits.

It hasn't affected me the same way a man married to two or more women or a woman to two or more men or a some variation thereof.

Someone that wanted to marry their toaster wouldn't personally affect me either. I guess that means it ok then.

I haven't had to move any gay couples into a new place just because I own a truck so, no, it hasn't affected me personally...yet.

The toaster can consent?

Sounds kind of dumb to expect an inanimate object to consent to anything, but you could try I suppose. One party consent should suffice just fine in these situations.

But the point is, just because something doesn't personally affect you, doesn't make it right or harmless. A point which makes the OP's post pointless.
