Los Angeles, California) A chain of mid sized newspapers has become the first publisher to order all of its papers to print gay and lesbian commitment announcements.

Freedom Communications Inc began the announcements in its flagship paper, "The Orange County [Calif.] Register," and this week extended the policy to all its papers.

The company owns more than thirty newspapers in 11 states, including "The [Alton, Ill.] Telegraph," the "Brownsville [Texas] Herald," and "The [Panama City, Fla.] News Herald."

"This is another huge step for gay and lesbian couples," said Joan M. Garry, executive director for the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD).

What's the point in putting "commitment announcments" in the paper? Just because? Or is it since they can't legally get married and they're screaming EQUALITY? Well guess what...mariage announcments aren't just to let everyone know that there's one more straight couple out there. It's because it's a legal matter and the public has the right to be informed on legal matters. So if a "commitment announcment" isn't a legal matter than why include it in the papers? Don't we have anough to write about in the papers already?

Maybe now we should be putting "commitment announcments" in the paper regarding boyfriend/girlfriend relationships.

You know...just because we can...

got a problem with gay rights?

A marriage is a union in the eyes of god and in the eyes of society between a man and a woman.

A commitment ceremony is nothing.

Gay rights are human rights.

They have the same human rights as everyone else does......they, like most minority groups want special rights.
Special in the eyes of the majority, who are used to living free from discrimination.

Look, I don't like those gay parades where the participants run around with pink triangles and scream from megahorns, but I guess you can't blame them when you have bigots like mister Gamer above trying to silence them simply because his brand of morality is the only one suitable for anyone.

Wow, well put, I never thought of it that way.

California has been putting gay peoples names in the paper for years. When I was in California working in the hospital with AIDS patients one of the patients quite naturally died. Well, the newpaper published this information, but the catch was that his wife and children did not know that he had AIDS or that he was gay (I don't believe in bisexual, you either are or are not). He was not estranged from his family by the way. :Q

Gay rights are human rights

I don't agree with this statement. Sexuality has NOTHING to do with humanity. Just watch the animal channel and you will see that most living things have sex, and NORMALLY with the opposite sex. People do NOT need to know who is in your bedroom unless they are paying to see it! Most people are just nosy as he!!. If you want to be treated like a human being then act like a human being and all should be fine.

I would not be and am not gay, but it would be MY business if I were.

Exactly.

If a gay couple decides to become monogamous and remain committed to each other, more power to them. Even better if they want to adopt children.

What is your problem, AZ, with gay rights?

I didn't know gays/lesbians could be committed just for their sexual orientation. Anyways, I don't think "commitment announcements" are appropriate because they violate patient privacy. 😀
