Gawd I hate tech stores that keep pushing extended warranties!!!

Page 3 - Seeking answers? Join the AnandTech community: where nearly half-a-million members share solutions and discuss the latest tech.
Purchasing an extended warranty for a rapidly depreciating technology product is never a smart move, regardless of the cost of the product. Why? Because most retail tech products have a manufacturers warranty for at least a year and, in one year's time, most tech products have a replacement cost of less than the original cost of the extended warranty -- meaning the item could be replaced in that time for less than you paid for the warranty.

For example, you buy a new stereo receiver for $400 bucks and have them throw in the extended warranty for $150 bucks. A year or so later, the receiver breaks, and you take it back to the store for repair/replacement under the extended warranty. On your way into the store, you see your exact same receiver on clearance for $99.95 ...

I'm surprised that more people don't take advantage of certain warranties....I've cashed out on several already...since with some warranties don't require you to return the product....so I just call up, say MYGOT!!! its broken!!!!....and they send me a store credit. I usually just ebay the new product. (usual holding periods are about 1 year). Old product (hehe) works just fine.

Everyone is happy....store sells a warranty, I get a new product (ebay), I still use old product....only loser is the warranty company. I can register with multiple addresses, names, etc....so they never catch on.

Wow, you're a real class-act

I never get extended warranties on anything I buy. They are a complete waste of money and equal pure profit for the seller. They make you jump through hoops before they honor them anyway.

Sucks that they were so pushy about it.

i would like to see someone do that, but its not something i would do. i'm too much of a tight arse to buy the extended warranty in the first place.

I just bought an X-box and was offered a warrentee. I asked the guy about it, and apparently I could throw the thing down a flight of stairs and they would fix/replace it.

That's B.S. They would make you send it in to a repair center which would take 4-6 weeks. As soon as they determined that it was abused they would deny the claim. Those salesmen will tell you ANYTHING and flat out lie to you to get you to purchase the extended warranty.

Hmm....way to commit fraud there. And if the warranty company is in another state, it's probably a federal crime. When you get caught, have fun in federal pound me in the ass prison.

Oh, and you're raising the prices for everyone else, too.

While I'm not defending the flight of stairs line, Electronics Boutique warranties are in-store on the spot replacements. No 4-6 week wait, and you get an equal unit to the one your purchased. New=new.

Did you guys also intentionally suck at inspecting PSX's for mods? I bought a used PSX and it was definitely quite modified. They may have inspected it as they said, but on this particular model, the chip gets soldered to the BACKSIDE of the board - the only model where that is true, so they just missed it.

Good grief, I went to OfficeMax today to pickup a $9.99 (AR) USB floppy drive and the manager was trying to push a $7 extended warranty on me even though it has a 2 year warranty from the factory...and what are the chances of the drive dying; I don't even plan on using it all that often. Just while installing RAID drivers during WinXP setup. Yet he kept pushing and pushing until I had to firmly say NO to his lard ass...

THEN, I go to CompUSA to pickup a Sony Clie PDA (not for me) and used the 10% off coupon. When the stockboy got me the PDA from the "cage" he was harping on the extended warranty for the PDA. I told him that I was not interested and that I typically don't keep my PDAs for very long. He persisted and I said NO! He shuttles me off to the cashier who asks me "Would you like to purchase an extended warranty?" I tell her no thanks. She says "Are you sure?" to which I reply "Yes!" So she calls for BACKUP!! WTF??!!:| She calls the manager over and she asks me:

"Why don't you want the extended warranty"

"I just don't want it"

"Why, what's your reasoning?"

**By this time, I'm pissed off to no end and there's a line forming behind me so I decide to get loud**

"BECAUSE IT MEANS PURE PROFIT FOR YOU GUYS IF NOTHING AT ALL GOES WRONG WHICH IS MOST LIKELY THE CASE WITH THIS PDA"

"Well, true...but what if something DOES go wrong?"

"I have the manufacturer's warranty and I'll stick with that. I DON'T WANT IT!!"

About this time, she gets the hint that I'm not going to purchase the extended warranty and leaves...

GRRRRRRRRRRR!!! LEAVE ME ALONE!!!:|:|
Would you like to Kiss my ass should have been your first reply 😛

The trick it to make them give you a better deal for buying the warranty, then turn around and return the warranty

a semi computer illiterate co worker went to best buy for a new computer. he just wanted the $500 computer that was in their ad and nothing else. to make a long story short and after many repeated extended warranty denials he got p!ssed and said he was taking his business elsewhere and left all the boxes and everything sitting on the checkout counter.

on another note, if the salesman tells you that you're x-box can be thrown down a flight of stairs and still be covered then the store should stand behind that. i'm not saying, throw your x-box down the stairs, but there is a possibility that they can be dropped and broken. it is false advertising if they are selling something different than what you are getting, regardless of the fine print.

The reason they push it on some of you is because in their eyes, you look weak.

That's why they hardly even ask once about it to me.

When I was buying my Seagate drive, and the lady asked if I wanted a warranty, I asked the price. She said something like $10 for a year and $8 for a second year.

Since I knew WD charges $15 to go from 1 to 3 years, I asked if I could pay $18 to go from 1 to 3 years. She told me that it replaces the Seagate warranty. WTH? $18 for one more year? No way!

I usually tell the CSR's "I'll take a chance" and I haven't gotten pestered yet.

On the other hand, I hear of some other types of warranties called TAPs (Technology Assurance Programs). Supposedly, if you buy a $400 PDA and spend ~$60 on the warranty, if anything small goes wrong, you could bring it back 2 years later and get a newer vastly improved $400 PDA for free, at which point you could pay another $60 for another TAP. If that's the case, that'd be cool.

Who said anything about physical strength?

The only thing that I can see getting an extended warranty for is at Best Buy for laptops. My friend got an eMachines POS laptop a few years ago, he paid $200 for BB's warranty, the laptop died 3x, qualifying it as a "lemon" and he got a brand new laptop for FREE.

We'd rather take it out on you. That's what you're getting paid for.
Then expect slow, terrible service as I call ahead to the cashier to verify your identity to the letter while you try to make your purchase, slowing you down as much as possible. UV check of bills? Check signature of CC? See driver's licence? Match to face?

Make my life unnecessarily hard and I'll gladly reciprocate. 🙂

shit you would be an A$$hole just to try and sale something that the customer has already said NO to? WTF.
Didn't you read where I wrote I hated selling the things and merely presented it to the customer? I can read people pretty well and know if someone's liable to take it or not - but the job requires you to ask once.

What I meant was I don't take unnecessary crap from anyone, even if you're a customer and I'm the salesperson. Ain't worth the self-respect to make a sale at the rate they pay me.

I've sold a $350 extended warranty on a $1000 laptop. Didn't do anything special - it was cursory and the furthest thing from my mind was her saying yes...in fact I had to control myself not to show my shock. Pretty amusing job some days.

Edit: Just so you know, the Best Buy motto is, "Every customer, every time." If you're a skinny wimp or Adonis himself a BB salesperson will ask - ditto with any of the competing stores. Get over yourself. 😛
