I'm not writing this to just rip on Doom 3. I'm a big fan of FPS games, I simply can't stand playing Doom3. Its entirely too dark.. Even with the duct tape mod, you can't see $hit. Every month or so, I'll determine that I'm going to beat the damn game finally, but as soon as I start playing it again, I remember why I stopped in the first place.

I've beaten Far Cry and I love that game, I much prefer replaying that than playing Doom3... How can you guys stand to Play D3? am I just missing something? Its so dark its not even fun to me. IT hurts the eyes trying to see some stupid zombie in a corner so you can plug him. I loved Doom 1 & 2, what happened to this version?

Because I've got giant brass balls and can man my way through the dark without a flashlight. Plus I had the flashlight 'switch' key bound to like mouse4 on my mouse so I could switch between flashlight and current gun quickly and easily. I also played on difficulty 3, 2 probably would have been too damn easy for my tastes.

If you are using a ducttape mod you are beyond wussy in my book.

I don't know why it would hurt your eyes. Do you have some sort of eye problem or poorly configured monitor? The lit areas should be lit and the dark areas should be dark. Is there an eye condition where looking at black hurts your eyes?

Well, it's not that bad. But I understand that some people just really can't get into it. It's just no your thing, move on to HL2! :)

Black is the most tiring color for your eye to look at, so I?d say everybody has it to some degree. Although doom 3 didn't hurt my eyes, I didn't like how dark it was... all the time.

That's the way the game is if you don't like it don' t play it. The is supposed to be enjoyed that way. Forget the duct tape mod, that's for pussies.

...and you're not supposed to be squinting into the darkness to see if you can make out a zombie. That's how you hurt your eyes.

Here is what you do, pressing F will get you the flash light. Pressing F again will return you to your weapon.

If it's dark, search with the light, find a zombie, switch to the gun and shoot, hoping you kill him (part of the excitement and freakiness), switch the light back on and check to see if he's dead.

People who can't stand to play Doom3 because of darkness shows to me that the game is too scary for them. So... if it's too scary for you, maybe you should stop playing.

Otherwise, enjoy a masterpiece in atmosphere and freakiness, even if the world doesn't make sense ex. no flashlight on the gun.

D3 = all action no plot or tactics. HL2, Farcry, Full Spetrum Warrior and even the ancient System Shock 2 are much better.

Edit: A friend loaned me his copy of D3 for a week, and I found the darkness annoying, if not inhibiting. Personally, I would think there would be a light on the gun or something (like there is in reality) or a way to dual wield flash light and gun. Unfortunately, this is not so. In any case, the game was all run and shoot, and it got so repetitive as to be annoying.

This statement is pretty oxymoron. I got much more story from D3 than from HL2 and HL2 is such an easy game, it offers little challenge compared to D3. So what kind of tactics are required in HL2. Stand and shoot the stationary enemy who moves sometimes in a linear path. D3's AI also has it's faults, but at least at times, with the bigger guys it's kinda hard to take them head on.

It still bothers me how much stock people put into HL2 where it has no challenge or barely any story, with prolonged vehicle scenes, which dragged on. But yet they say the exact same thing about D3, which many probably never played all the way through... cause they're afraid of the dark. :p

I think a lot of people were scared of the game and lashed out saying it sucked. That game was a masterwork of horror. My girlfriend hates video games but she sat thru the entire game watching me play. Infact I couldn't play unless she was watching. She loves horror films (especialy japanese horror). When we would finish playing we would always feel weird. The atmosphere, music and slower play style is beyond most people I think. To think you would want to read all of the emails to build the story.

I remember the part where the women was calling to us and talking about losing her child. She said "psst...over here" I turned and almost stepped into a empty elevator shaft!! I almost killed myself because of the atmosphere, it was great, I will remember that moment in gaming for a very long time. Def worth the money paid.

I played through both. By the end of Doom 3 I was playing it just to be able to say I beat it (and I was stilled pretty amazed by the graphics). By the end of Half-Life 2 I was ready to start again (and I did soon after). That's just me, but my opinion is every bit as valid as yours.

You do know that D3 was advertised for bringing back the origional gameplay of Doom...which was all...you guessed it...action and no plot. But somehow almost all the Doom 3 bashers kind of missed that point.
