Gator Spyware

Is there anyway to completely get rid of this. One of my kids hit the wrong key while browsing and I can not get rid of it completely.

I had heard before that uninstalling Gator did not remove its spyware component. That web site tells how.

Ya, it looks like one of the DIVX codecs I am using is the culprit. Now I just need to find one that doesn't have the spyware. I did fiond a setting to change the number of times it pop'd up to 5 vs 10 or unlimited(?).

I logged onto the URL to remove Gator

It installed a Gator robot on my computer. I found it with AD-aware 5.83 and removed it.

Warning to others do not log onto that above fake support site. :Q

Some spy ware, like GAIN, cannot be uninstalled. It comes with DivX5.0 for example. However, you don't need to uninstall it to disable it.

These instructions are applicable to Win2K, and are probably similar for WinXP:

1. Find the gator executable.
2. Go to the securities tab of the files properties. Uncheck the box at the bottom left (inheritable permissions).
3. Remove all the users listed at the top.
4. Next add a new user group "everyone". Set all its file permissions to deny.

Now everyone who logs onto your computer will be unable to execute the program. Also make sure to take sole ownership of the file, so that anyone else with admin privledges cannot change these settings.

I would also recommend getting a firewall. And not allowing the program to connect to the internet. But with the above solution, a program that cannot execute, cannot spy on you, and cannot connect to the internet

It turned out to be in my C:\program files\common file\GMT

I made a complete search for gain and that ivX5.0 file plus gator and came up empty. Not on my HD.

The Gator robot I got from logging onto the URL is gone. AD-aware 5.83 found it and deleted it.

Is this the same Gator $hit that wants you to install it when installing Webshots desktop? I myself have the Divx codec 5.0.2 installed and have never gotten any gaim or Gator stuff. Weird.
