Gateway XHD3000 30" 2560x1600 monster

HardForum was less than friendly to Gateway 24", so I don't thing they will praise this one either. One person can't do much in such situation.
 
For what they expect me to pay for this monitor, I can get a 42" 1080p LCD and just use that for my games. I'll take a large TV that I can use for my PC before I pay this amount for a smaller size (regardless of the resolution).
 
I will never, ever buy a gateway monitor let alone product again. I hopped on the Gateway 21" a couple years back as it was supposed to be the best thing on earth. It's pretty good, but the glaring flaws make it not worth the premium. And sadly, I've heard the 24" had some similar deficiencies.

Bad USB ports, screen uniformity sucks, my first one went dead within 2 months, and for the life of me I can't get it to work on DVI on a Dell docking station.

If their Tablet PC's are any indication, Gateway's products are too good to be true. Great feature set, but the reliability and longevity just aren't there.
 
I have been waiting for a 30inch display to actually have scaling capabilities (and to be able to properly take input from a blueray/hd-dvd player...). Price is a little high but if I had to replace my 2405 I would go with this display now. Hopefully as other have said dell/hp/samsung will release displays with similar tech and maybe they will be done to around $1000 next spring.
 
For those of you who really are 30" enthusiasts, lemme ask you...


I CAN hold off til Xmas to get my 30" monitor, but should I? Do you think other companies are going to be bringing out a similar model w/ similar specs?

I'm always leary about buying something when it FIRST comes out..and this is a pretty large investment.

Well if it helps your decision any, the other makers have been going the opposite direction with the 24" panels, opting for less features/inputs and faster/cheaper panels (TNs in some cases).

Also, I think the main 30" panels this would compete with (Samsung, HP, Dell) are all single input S-IPS (maybe not the Samsung, though the review seems to confirm this with the 72% vs 92% NTSC) with no built-in video scaler. They'd have to come out with a new model that would compete or replace their existing models, which are all relatively new or refreshed within the last 6 months or so. Never know though, this might force them to add similar features but that might take awhile.

Read the review, and this panel does come with a remote. 😀

Personally, i would wait a bit if you can, since this really does seem like an awesome LCD.

The nice thing about Gateway is that they often sell thru the big local stores (like say Best Buy), so you'd end up with a nice return policy in case.

It really depends how long you want to wait, how much you're willing to spend, & whether or not the features provided by this Gateway are worth it to you...
 
I'm a little puzzled as to why they chose to go the 72% route vs 92%. Kind of disappointed, really. The bulk of the high end LCD market is going 92%, both Dell and HP offer 92% for $400 less. If it were a cost issue it's not like those who can afford $1700 monitors can't afford $1800 monitors.

I was hoping I'd find something on Gateway's site to prove the review wrong, but I'd imagine if it were 92% they'd be bragging about it. No mention whatsoever of gamut.

I'd also, obviously, be interested in hearing about your thoughts too. Is it THAT big of a deal?
 
Nope.

I'm sure some people could see benefits, but i don't feel it's the end of the world or even a dealbreaker in this case, since a 2560x1600 S-PVA (even with the lower color gamut) is still an amazingly high quality beast.

Perfect, no.
But there's not much in life that's perfect.

Usually you gotta settle for sacrificing something or other for something better.
 
No it's not a huge deal. It's just an odd compromise in a monitor priced for people who don't like compromises.

I'll be in the market for a 30" soon, the Gateway would be a lock if it weren't for the gamut. I don't really need the inputs, though the scaling is certainly nice.

Yeah...

See I was sold on the HP until this came out...I also don't need the extra inputs as my 360 and PS3 are all hooked up to my 65" Mits WD-65831...but the option is fantastic.

And the scaler...well, just gravy.

So if the gamut isn't a "huge" deal, then this sure looks like the way I'll go.

I just wish there were a couple more reviews on this hoss...googl'ing it and nothing comes back but that ONE review already posted here.

I'm well set for TV, the one analog input that IS useful to me is VGA. I frequently end up working on machines for friends/family and DVI ports are somewhat rare, much less dual-link DVI. I have to maintain something that will take VGA, but that alone isn't worth a $400+ premium over a potentially superior Dell. Damn you Gateway for complicating what could have been an easy choice.

From a strictly purist sense, the new 27 inch Samsung LCD panel blows the Gateway monitor out of the water. it received a 10 on the extreme tech review, had uniform backlighting, great contrast and brightness and color gamut (color gamut was a weak point of the gateway). Video procwessing was its weak point , but I would leave that up to my video card as this would be a gaming monitor for me.

Sure, but 2560x1600 is nearly double the pixels.
Not really the same ballpark.

BTW, has anyone found these Gateways for sale anywhere?
 
PC World short review...doesn't mention the upscaling though

Audioholics review...basically says the backlighting needs some work, but it's the 30" monitor to have now.


Computer Shopper loves it

"At the screen's highest resolution (using dual-link DVI), the XHD3000's performance was stellar. It blew through every test with flying colors. Gray-scale performance was very strong, overall color performance was excellent, and we did not feel the same discomfort we had at the lower resolution when sitting up close. We seldom see a monitor perform this well, but you'll need to make sure your machine's video card can drive this monitor at this resolution."

Tech Almighty LOVES it


So, what I'm taking from all the reviews is that this is the best monitor on the market, plain and simple. And it makes for a damn fine TV too. It's the best mix of the two out there.

The upscaling ability, coupled with great PQ and the tons of inputs are just awesome.


The downsides are:

The cost...but really whats a couple of hundred more at that point?

It gets hot.

You really need a dual DVI video card to run it properly. But seriously, if you're shelling out this much for a monitor, this is a no-brainer, right?



Just thought I'd update the thread with more of the latest 'n greatest reviews. Hope this helps some of you guys out. It sure has me!
 
Oh and Best Buy is showing these in stores all over it seems. Esp. w/ the holidays coming, go look and see if yours has it in stock!
 
So, I'm about to finally pull the trigger on this bad boy and am wondering where everyone has seen/found any of these.

I really HATE the idea of buying it thru Best Buy and paying tax thru Gateway is less than ideal.


Any other REPUTABLE places to pick up one of these panels of LOVE? 🙂
