I know some Dell PSU can't just plug into any MB as Dell has dorked with the ATX connector.

Just got a 3 year old Gateway from compgeeks and would like to use the really nice desktop case with a more modern motherboard. (and put the gate way motherboard into my KS-282 that I hate and give it to my folks).

Connector looks standard ATX. Is there any chance that pluging thiss PSU into a non-gateway MB will fry it?

Thanks in advance to any gateway expert that answers.

Some Gateway power connectors are non-standard. The standard 20-pin ATX connector pinout can be found all over the web - PC Power & Cooling (click on "See Diagram" of the right most model on the page) for one... The newer mobos may also require (or work better with) a P4 connector (4-pin, square connector). You can get a P4 adapter (drive power to P4) from lots of places including PCP&C, newegg (look under I-Star), SVC, etc.

Check to see if it has the P7 connector on the psu or not, if it does then your outta luck as this needs to be connected to the mobo, I'm doing the exact same thing with an old P2 350 gateway, and putting in a better mobo.
Also might want to check the front panel connectors too as this particular gateway I'm working on uses a single plug setup.

Thanks for the info!

Really like this desktop case and was hoping to reuse with new parts and give the guts of the gateway transplanted into a mid tower to my folks but there are several problems

1. not sure of my antec KS282 can handle the passively cooled 500mhz P3 like the ducted PSU on the desktop can.
2. The rear ATX pannel for connections is rivited into the case and does not have a lan or sound connectors. so that's gonna be a hassle.
3. not sure if the 200w PSU can handle and AMD psu
4. power swich on front of gateway case connects to the MB not the PSU

1. I guess it all depends on how the heat is ducted out of the case, those gateway pc's are usally ducted thru the psu if I remember correctly.
2. the rear panel on my new mobo is diff to the one I took off but luckily the i/o panel comes off and I'm in the process of modifying one that will fit.
3. your reasoning is sound, 200w is deff on the very low side to say the least.
4.front panel connector connects to the mobo but instead of the usual seperate leads they are all molded into on plug which is what I meant to say in my first post, which might make it difficult to mod if your connections on the mobo don't line up like the old mobo did, if you get what I mean ?
