Thinking about purchasing gateway's new mx7515 laptop from bestbuy it has:

* Mobile AMD Athlon? 64 processor 4000+ (2.6ghz 1mb cache)
* 1.0 GB pc2700 ram
* 100GB 4200rpm hd
* ATI Mobility x600 radeon 64mb onboard Ram (GPU Clocked 420 core 260 mem)
* Firewire, usb 2,0 and all the other basics

Other than the 4200rpm HD (I use firewire 7200rpm drives in when doing video editing anyhow), does this machine have any weaknesses?

Is there any P-M machine that could even compare to this machine for video editing / professional photoshop/illustrator use? I see all these killer dell coupons floating around the web, but as far as I can see the only thing these dells would have over this machine is 3d gaming, for which a 2.6ghz A64 with x600 really wouldn't be that bad for anyhow.

Battery life, atleast on its predecessor the 7510gx was always tested at between 2-2.5 hrs. which isn't really bad, but not quite as good as the Dell 9300's 3-3.5 hour battery life.

Bestbuy MX7515 Page

Thanks In Advance

Actually, for doing video editing, you are probably better off going with this laptop.

i think the XPS 2 would probably give it a run for its money (although I would acknowledge it would be slower), but it is very bandwidth starved, which you would see during video editing.

MAJOR WEAKNESS- GPU!! For that processor speed the video card is lacking big time. Should have at least put the X700 in it.

GPU...
that is what i was thinking as well. my old toshiba i bought back in 2002 has a 64 MB GPU in it. the top of the line acer aspiron has the 256 MB X700 in it... which is more up to par of top-of-the-line these days. The XPS gen 2 by Dell has a good NVIDIA GO 6800.

They don't have their 7510 listed there either, but could be found sold out of bestbuys around the country :D And the XPS Gen 2 has a 6800U :)

So yeah, the GPU is lacking big time. Look into Asus, they make some fine notebooks for a reasonable price.

I am a friend of Hypersonic, but you have to be ready to lay down some cash. They Hypersonic will be more then double the price of that Gateway. I mean gateway is a company where you can buy a lot of notebook for cheap.

Look into Acer and Asus.

Actually the AMD Athlon 64 mobile 4000+ is 2.6 ghz. Since it is socket 754 single channel chip and has an 800mhz hyperT bus, it is rated at the same 4000+ as a 2.4ghz desktop dual channel 1000mhz hyperT bus processor.

AMD Athlon64 Mobile Processor Overview

By the way, thanks for the recommendations guys but, I think for what I need (Video editing - Premiere Pro, After Effects) the difference between an x600 and x700 would be negligible. For gaming I only play a few sports games (Madden etc.) which should run fine and command and conquer generals, which should also be fine. I was just curious if anyone knew of any crazy deals for other notebooks in the mx7515's performance range before I jumped on it.

There is the MSI MS-1029: 15.4" WXGA Turion 64 notebook with 128MB ATI MR X700 graphics. This will have much better battery life, but be a lot slower due to a max of 2.4GHz Turion CPU. It is more configurable since the MS-1029 is a barebones chassis. Comes out around the same price usually

But that Gateway is a beast for the money, just not good on battery & produces a fair amt of heat. Turion runs a lot cooler, lot less power, and is still pretty quick. If mobility is important, get the MSI. If not, get the Gateway.

thanks fbrdphreak. I was actually hoping you'd reply to this thread. Now if only i knew where to find a decent deal on some high end turion chips, i'd be in business.

Here's a pretty good selection of Turions. You can get the MT-40 or ML-40 from these guys. I've never ordered anything from eWiz, but they have a decent ResellerRating. I don't know what you consider a decent deal, but that's a lot cheaper than a PM 2.23GHz 780 (~$650).

For video editing, GPU doesnt' matter that much. My Gateway 7426 (A64 3700) renders faster than my desktop (P4 3Ghz running at 3.6), and the destop has an X800XL, while the Gateway has the MR9600.

In the case of the mx7515, the GPU does matter a little since the machine uses an X600 with Hypermemory. Thus, he might have up to 64MB of system memory being used to page data in and out the GPU's local memory.

Thanks for all the help guys, The MSI 1029 looks tempting, I'm just trying to piece it together online right now. I might have to flip a coin or something.

????? A Gateway with an AMD processor is nothing short of unbelievable, let alone a genuine 4000+ in it. What the heck is going on? I thought Gateway was blood brothers with Intel.

Very little GPU memory is needed for video rendering....I doubt it will even use the 64MB of dedicated memory. System RAM is another matter.

Besides, my gateway has the same setup (MR9600 64MB) with an even slower memory bus (AGP vs PCIE) and it still outguns my desktop with 256MB of GPU ram.

True, not for video editing. I didn't notice that "For video editing" part of your post.

Mobility x700 is 8 pipes, while 9700 is 4 pipes.

Have to HiJack thread also. I saw ad for the 1199.99 gateway and just have to ask. Will it run EverQuest2. Most of the specs are at or above minimum Sony Online Entertainment Requirements. The shared video card is a little scary, but if I set settings for performance instead of for graphic enhancement will I be able to get my EQ2 fix while on the road??

The gateway discussed here does not have a shared video card, it has a discrete x600 with dedicated memory.

I can't tell you if it will run Everquest, but it screams in half life 2....only thing is, you can't play with anti-aliasing. That's the downside of a second rate video card.

If you can live without AA, even Doom 3 runs decently on that machine with medium settings.
