Gateway Desktop Memory Upgrade

I am updrading an older Gateway P4, 2.8 GHz HT from 512 (2X256 Dual Channel) to 1024. Runing XP Pro. Which would be the preferred way to upgrade - inserting 2X512 to use the dual channel effect, or just use a single 1024. The owner only does internet surfing , email, and some childrens learning programs, no games or serious photo editing. The memory type is DDR PC3200. Sorry, forgot to mention that the board only has 2 memory slots.

It probably won't make a whole heck of a lot of difference, but you may as well take advantage of dual channel.

Thanks, DSF, I was leaning towards your train of thought. The computer owner lives in Staten Island and recently had FIOS installed, so I guess every little bit of speed would be helpful. Thanks again!

Based on the usage you posted I'd buy based on price. And, most likely 2 x 512mb for that rig will cost less than a single 1024 due to IC density and availability.

Yellowbeard, You convinced me! I went with price and future upgradability.

Ordered a single 1024 stick for $10 less than 2X 512 sticks, and that will allow for future memory upgrade if the lady ever wants to go that route. I do think, that after some reading that the dual channel effect on her system would be negligible. (I don't intend to start the "dual channel vs single channel" debate).

For the usages you listed there will likely be no advantage either way.

Here's my final word on this:

I was not pleased with the single 1024 stick (Kingston) in the way of speed; it really seemed noticebly slower on boot and normal operations. So I went with the 2 X 512 and with that I was satisfied and CPUZ confirmed also the dual channel effect. Thanks to all for your inputs.
