So this seems to be the best bang for the buck for a gaming laptop... gateway 6860fx USD1350.00

I found other laptops for about the same price but it had a 8600 gt instead with a slightly better processor and only 3gb of ram...

Any other thoughts or suggestions?

It certainly is a good deal. And you can always update the CPU later, once your warranty is expired of course.

If the size and weight don't bother you, then I'd say go for it. Although I'd shop around to see where you can get the best price. Also some smaller boutique sellers would probably be willing to upgrade the cpu for you and still allow you to keep the warranty.

I bought one a couple of weeks and it's a screamer :) Runs everything (other than Crysis) really well - couldn't be happier! After a year or so, I'll upgrade the cpu and hdd and start OCing the gpu

I went ahead and purchased it. Its fantastic. In a year or so I'll probably buy a better processor on the cheap and drop it in. Battery life isn't fantastic but if you need great battery life you aren't going to buy a laptop with a 8800 in it.

Love this laptop. I needed a more powerful laptop and was ready to buy a thinkpad when I saw this on sale. Now I've got a spare system for LAN Parties or don't even need to packup my SFF Shuttle for a quick friday evening of TF2.

Highend Shuttle is still cheaper for easy transport to LAN Parties, but if this machine were available for under $1000 I'd stop selling mid range shuttles.

Other things it note:
- It's heavy. Not something you'd would want on a long walking commute every day. Yet still lighter then a Shuttle + Monitor. (The power brick is also "big" and heavy.)
- For a desktop replacement laptop it have a very surprising run time of @ 90 minutes (watching video).
- 17" Size limits your laptop bag choices. The battery also juts out the back even limiting your 17" choices. (Send me a PM if you want links to some that I know fit).
- You probably already know that the combination of 1440x900 resolution + 8800GT = Fast frame rates. However don't expect to enable high end AA. I haven't looked into it in great detail, but I'm suspecting that the memory bandwidth isn't anything near what a desktop 8800GT is running.
- It's got a very nice looking case for a what in reality is a "budget gaming" laptop.

For the $$ I don't think you will be disappointed. The only laptops I've seen that can compete with this for gaming are all @ $2000 and up.

Just got mine last night. I only paid $1200.00 at Best Buy for it because they had a 15% sticker on it by mistake, the sticker was supposed to be on a HP next to it.

i saved $200.00, not bad for a great gaming laptop. Couldn't be happier but i'm buying a T9300 to upgrade the cpu, while not bad the stock cpu won't cut it for me, lol

Buy.com had it in their email deals yesterday, but the page didn't exist. I think it was a price mistake. Even though it was a refurb unit, they had it listed for something like $600. :Q Refurb or not I would have gotten one.

zap that deal got posted over on some other sites (fatwallet, slickdeals etc). chances are they ~might~ have had some, but at that price they probably sold out rather quickly :p
