Let me start out by saying I own the Gateway 21" display & I still think it's one of the best LCDs on the market. Gateway 21"

I'm in the market for a 22" monitor for work, so I figured I'd head down to BB to check out their new 22" display. Gateway 22"

My local BB actually still has the 21" out next to the new 22" & I couldn't have been more disappointed in the picture quality on the 22". Mainly because Gateway reduced the Contrast Ratio from 1000:1 to 700:1. It's very clear that the quality just isn't there on the 22".

Sure, the price point is great on the 22" at $399 (possibly lower at other stores), but I'm telling you now, you'll get what you pay for. I'd rather have the brighter & better looking 21".

Just thought I'd give you guys a heads up in case you were getting your panties wet over this not-so-great 22" monitor. Trust me, I wish my opinion were different, because I'd be buying one. Don't just take my word for it, check it out for yourself.

my dad has the 21" , it is definitely a great display, and that is mostly due to the fact that its an 8-bit panel AFAIK.

It is NOT 8-bit. I verified this with my Gateway rep a long time ago, not to mention try playing EVE Online with it sometime. You'll definitely see that it's not 8-bit.

from what i know the 21" gateway is more or less the same monitor as the 21" HP or samsung monitors which is 8bit and hdcp etc.

the el cheapo 22" is the chi mei panel all the other 22s have supposedly and i think is 6bit also.

yep. The 21" is an S-PVA panel (which is right on the specs page), which would lead me to believe it is definitely 8-bit...

It is my understanding that all the 21-inch Widescreen LCD monitors use the same Samsung S-PVA 8-bit panel.

Is there any other 21-inch panel out there?

I was unaware that 6-bit 21"w S-PVAs existed. I know pretty much for sure that 6-bit 20"w S-PVAs and 6-bit 20" P-MVAs exist, however.

I believe you are correct. Someone told me it was the same panel as the samsung 215tw?

You can easily see 6-bit gradients and artifacts thanks to the subtle backgrounds in Eve. Being that space has a lot of black in it... it's not too difficult to see.
