I usually use the Aisin TB kits or genuine Honda OEM parts but a friend wants me to install a Gates TB kit he's already purchased on his Civic. I have been hesitant to them because of reports that the included Gates brand ( made in China) water pumps often fail early. Anyone here have experience with them lately ? - Thanks

The subaru guys have no problem with gates timing belt kits. It is often recommended to buy their belt kits (non blue performance) without the wp and go with an oem wp and wp gasket. Might as well get a new tstat while you're at it.

I heard they updated their water pump gasket lately, but I can't confirm that. And that might not even effect the honda kits.

I won't use Gates water pumps after having one fail after less than 20k miles.

This what I've heard as well. I used the Gates pump. At least its easy to replace on a Suby should it fail prematurely:p

I used a Gates belt for my '01 Odyssey, but a Bosch water pump. Only put 5K on the setup, 180K total mileage. Pretty sure anything on the van is going to outlast the dreadful Honda V6 auto.

So we have decided not use the Gates WP. I told him to get an Aisin or or real Honda OEM water pump then I will do the job.

BTW, when looking on fleabay for the water pumps, I noticed some Honda TB kits with NPW (Japan) water pumps. What is the story with those (although we're sticking with Aisin or OEM for this job) ?

Dunno about the pumps but Gates still makes good drive belts (V or serpentine). I'd be surprised if their timing belts were not quality.

I bought an Aisin water pump for a 4AGZE the other day that looked like absolute death, the casting was the most miserable thing I've ever seen in my life. The guys in the community assured me they were a quality part so I'll use it, but it did not make a good first impression. I haven't bought one in years for an Asian motor, just euro stuff.

I don't trust any part anymore to be honest, I look really, really close at every single piece that crosses my hand.

I prefer the Goodyear Gatorback belts when available. I find them quieter, less stretch, and last longer. You can purchase at Summit Racing as many race car drivers know about this. Check out the reviews of these belts at Summit Racing. It's almost a perfect score.
